Receptionists are employed as administrative assistants, but in Community Health Centres, especially rural ones, they are the first step in service delivery, the intake system. This has implications for the people seeking services and for receptionists. This paper looks at receptionist data from an intake study alongside relevant literature and makes findings relating to the occupational health and safety (OH&S) of receptionists and for intake systems.

A public aid clinic prototype: utilizing a dental hygiene educational facility to increase access to care.

Few dentists in a rural Midwestern community participate in providing oral health care to public aid recipients. In response, faculty at a baccalaureate degree dental hygiene program located at Southern illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC) proposed, developed, and implemented the Heartland Dental Clinic to serve Medicaid participants. The unique program utilizes existing facilities, staff, and students to provide comprehensive oral health care to underserved populations.

Obstetricians and maternal body weight and eating disorders during pregnancy.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), body weight gain during pregnancy and smoking, eating and weight-losing behaviors. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the practices of obstetricians to determine whether more can be done to prevent IUGR and 'do no harm' to the body image of women during pregnancy. Obstetricians (n = 67) who reported delivering an average of 125 babies in the previous year completed a questionnaire that enquired about their antenatal practice of maternal weighing, history taking and referral of pregnant women.
