Nitrate is one of the chemicals often added to wastewater to control hydrogen sulfide production by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). While the effect of nitrate in various SRB pure cultures is well documented, the effect observed in mixed microbial communities is not consistent. This study investigates the response of mixed SRB communities to nitrate, by examining the changes in activity and community composition of sulfidogenic wastewater biofilm over a 10-day period with 10 mmol L(-1) nitrate exposure. Biofilms were enriched in SRB belonging to the Desulfobacter, Desulfobulbus, Desulfomicrobium, and Desulfovibrio genera. Nitrate exposure decreased dsrB transcription within 4 h, and sulfate consumption within 10 days, but it did not fully eliminate sulfide production in the biofilms. The effect of nitrate on SRB was genus specific; Desulfobacter and Desulfobulbus disappeared while Desulfovibrio and Desulfomicrobium persisted in the biofilms. Nitrate exposure also led to the rapid proliferation of nitrate-reducing bacteria within the biofilms, and increased the biofilm thickness. Nitrate consumption began within 2 h of nitrate exposure and gradually increased in rate over time. Transcription of the nitrate reductase napA, and the diversity of nitrate reductase genes narG and napA also increased concurrently. Our results demonstrate that some SRB, presumably those able to tolerate or detoxify nitrite, will persist in sulfidogenic wastewater biofilms despite continuous exposure to high levels of nitrate. Nitrate is therefore unlikely to provide lasting hydrogen sulfide suppression in wastewater biofilms harboring Desulfovibrio or Desulfomicrobium populations.

This study aims to investigate the genotoxic effects of intragastric administration of neodymium nitrate (Nd(NO)) over 28 consecutive days and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms.
Methods: We detected the content of neodymium in mouse liver tissue using ICP-MS and assessed the percentage of tail DNA in mouse hepatocytes using the alkaline comet assay to evaluate genotoxicity.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are both emerging pollutants that are frequently detected in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, the effects of various MPs, including polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA), on nitrification performance, dominant microbial communities, and antibiotic resistance during nitrification were investigated. Coral reef sponges efficiently take up particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the water column and release compounds such as nucleosides, amino acids, and other dissolved metabolites to the surrounding reef via their exhalent seawater, but the influence of this process on reef picoplankton and nutrient processing is relatively unexplored. Here we examined the impact of sponge exhalent on the reef picoplankon community and subsequent alterations to the reef dissolved metabolite pool. In this study, novel anion photo-responsive supramolecular hydrogels based on cysteine-silver sol (CSS) and iodate anions (IO) were prepared. The peculiarities of the self-assembly process of gel formation in the dark and under visible-light exposure were studied using a complex of modern physico-chemical methods of analysis, including viscosimetry, UV spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, electrophoretic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In the dark phase, the formation of weak snot-like gels takes place in a quite narrow IO ion concentration range.
