International quality assurance schemes for cholesterol.

Scand J Clin Lab Invest Suppl

Published: June 1990

Lipid disorders rank high among the risk factors known to be associated with development of cardiovascular diseases which constitute a great socio-economic problem in many countries. Blood lipid lipoprotein and apolipoprotein measurements belong in all types of medical services to the most important ones not only because of their diagnostic but also of predictive value. Especially the measurement of blood cholesterol concentration is used in different studies and population screenings as an aid in establishing the degree of the risk of the development of cardiovascular disease. Accurate methods and uniform decision cut-points are needed for identifying individuals at high risk for comparability among results from different places and for preventing false diagnostic decisions based on inaccurate measurements. International Reference and/or Standardization Centres are of utmost importance helping to bring methods into uniform accuracy and precision limits everywhere. Local reference and standardization centres can be created with their assistance. Using the example of control of total cholesterol methods this paper describes some of the activities of the WHO Lipid Reference Centre at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) in Prague Czechoslovakia which shows comparability to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC Atlanta) standardization basis and mentions several other standardization centres in different countries.

Background: Real-world COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) studies are investigating exposures of increasing complexity accounting for time since vaccination. These studies require methods that adjust for the confounding that arises when morbidities and demographics are associated with vaccination and the risk of outcome events. Methods based on propensity scores (PS) are well-suited to this when the exposure is dichotomous, but present challenges when the exposure is multinomial.

Background: Postpartum depression remains a significant concern, posing substantial challenges to maternal well-being, infant health, and the mother-infant bond, particularly in the face of barriers to traditional support and interventions. Previous studies have shown that mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer an accessible means to facilitate early detection and management of mental health issues while at the same time promoting preventive care.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Leveraging on Virtual Engagement for Maternal Understanding & Mood-enhancement (LoVE4MUM) mobile app, which was developed based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoeducation and serves as an intervention to prevent postpartum depression.

What is wrong with the peer review system? Is peer review sustainable? Useful? What other models exist? These are central yet contentious questions in today's academic discourse. This perspective critically discusses alternative models and revisions to the peer review system. The authors highlight possible changes to the peer review system, with the goal of fostering further dialog among the main stakeholders, including producers and consumers of scientific research.

A Fast-Pass, Desorption Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry Strategy for Untargeted Metabolic Phenotyping.

J Am Soc Mass Spectrom

January 2025

Department of Chemistry, Center for Innovative Technology, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee 37235, United States.

Desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) provides direct analytical readouts of small molecules that can be used to characterize the metabolic phenotypes of genetically engineered bacteria. In an effort to accelerate the time frame associated with the screening of mutant libraries, we have developed a high-throughput DESI-MSI analytical workflow implementing a single raster line-scan strategy that facilitates the collection of location-resolved molecular information from engineered strains on a subminute time scale. Evaluation of this "Fast-Pass" DESI-MSI phenotyping workflow on analytical standards demonstrated the capability of acquiring full metabolic profiling information with a throughput of ∼40 s per sample.
