Objective: To investigate the effect of baicalin on pulmonary functions and its mechanism during the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) induced by oleic acid (OA) in rats.

Methods: Rats were randomized into 5 groups: control, ARDS (OA induction, 0.12 mg/kg), baicalin-treated group (150 mg/kg), baicalin-treated group (300 mg/kg) and baicalin-treated group (450 mg/kg). The blood samples and lung tissue were collected at 10 min, 1, 2 and 6 h after OA injection. The lung concentration of myeloperoxidase (MPO) was detected by an ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) kit. Meanwhile, blood gas analysis and pulmonary pathological examination were also performed.

Results: The level of arterial oxygen partial pressure and oxygenation index decreased (P < 0.01 vs. control) and oxygenation index (190 mm Hg, 1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa) reached the diagnostic standard of ARDS at 2 h in ARDS group. In baicalin-treated group (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg), the level of arterial oxygen partial pressure and oxygenation index increased versus the ARDS group. In baicalin-treated group (450 mg/kg), the level of arterial oxygen partial pressure was undifferentiated at 1, 2 and 6 h (P > 0.05) and decreased at 10 min (46.8 mm Hg, P < 0.05) versus the ARDS group. The level of MPO increased in baicalin-treated (300 mg/kg) and ARDS groups. Compared with the ARDS group, the level of MPO decreased significantly in baicalin-treated group (300 mg/kg) at 10 min, 1 and 2 h. Meanwhile, the pulmonary pathological damage improved in baicalin-treated group (300 mg/kg).

Conclusion: An appropriate dose of baicalin may improve hypoxemia of ARDS induced by OA in rats. It may be due to the inhibition of MPO activity.

Article Synopsis
  • This research explored how baicalin, a natural compound, inhibits infections by disrupting the cell wall and reducing biofilm formation in bacteria, enhancing antibacterial efficacy.
  • In laboratory and in vivo experiments, baicalin was shown to improve survival rates of infected yellow catfish, elevating liver health and enhancing several antioxidant and immune markers while reducing inflammatory responses.
  • The study concluded that baicalin not only protects against microbial infections but also positively influences the gut microbiome of the fish, restoring beneficial bacterial populations.

Introduction: Baicalin is a flavonoid chemical extracted and purified from the traditional Chinese medicine named Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, which possesses broad pharmacological properties. Our work aimed to explore the protective role of baicalin in allergic asthma and its potential mechanisms on regulating type 2 immune response.

Methods: Mice were injected intraperitoneally with ovalbumin (OVA) twice, further challenged with OVA aerosol for continuous 5 days.

Baicalin ameliorates the gut barrier function and intestinal microbiota of broiler chickens.

The deoxynivalenol (DON)-contaminated feeds can impair chicken gut barrier function, disturb the balance of the intestinal microbiota, decrease chicken growth performance and cause major economic loss. With the aim of investigating the ameliorating effects of baicalin on broiler intestinal barrier damage and gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by DON, a total of 150 Arbor Acres broilers are used in the present study. The morphological damage to the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum caused by DON is reversed by treatment with different doses of baicalin, and the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, claudin-1, and occludin) is also significantly increased in the baicalin-treated groups.
