The activity of an yttrium alkoxide complex supported by a ferrocene-based ligand was controlled using redox reagents during the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide. The oxidized complex was characterized by X-ray crystallography and (1)H NMR, XANES, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Switching in situ between the oxidized and reduced yttrium complexes resulted in a change in the rate of polymerization of L-lactide. Synthesized polymers were analyzed by gel permeation chromatography. Polymerization of trimethylene carbonate was also performed with the reduced and oxidized forms of an indium alkoxide complex. The indium system showed the opposite behavior to that of yttrium, revealing a metal-based dependency on the rate of polymerization.

The increasing power and integration of electronic devices have intensified serious heat accumulation, driving the demand for higher intrinsic thermal conductivity in thermal interface materials, such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Grafting mesogens onto PDMS can enhance its intrinsic thermal conductivity. However, the high stability of the PDMS chain limits the grafting density of mesogens, restricting the improvement in thermal conductivity.

The development of chemically recyclable polymers for sustainable 3D printing is crucial to reducing plastic waste and advancing towards a circular polymer economy. Here, we introduce a new class of polythioenones (PCTE) synthesized via Michael addition-elimination ring-opening polymerization (MAEROP) of cyclic thioenone (CTE) monomers. The designed monomers are straightforward to synthesize, scalable and highly modular, and the resulting polymers display mechanical performance superior to commodity polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene.

Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) has been widely employed for various biomedical applications owing to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. The discovery of the stereocomplex formation between enantiomeric alternating PLGA pairs underscored its potential as high-performance biodegradable materials with diverse material properties and biodegradability. Herein, we have established a regio- and stereoselective ring-opening polymerization approach for the synthesis of stereocomplexed isoenriched alternating PLGA from racemic methyl-glycolide (rac-MG).

Antimicrobial Polymer via ROMP of a Bioderived Tricyclic Oxanorbornene Lactam Derivative.

ACS Appl Bio Mater

January 2025

Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V., Hohe Straße 6, 01069 Dresden, Germany.

The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represents a critical global health threat, underscoring the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies beyond conventional antibiotics. In this study, we report the synthesis of novel biobased antimicrobial polymers bearing quaternary ammonium salts, derived from sustainable feedstocks, maleic anhydride, dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and furfurylamine. The functional tricyclic oxanorbornene lactam monomer is polymerized via ring opening metathesis polymerization, yielding well-defined polymers with controlled molar masses and low dispersity.

The effectiveness of metallocene catalysts in the cationic ring-opening polymerization (cationic ROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL) is influenced by the choice of metallocene/borate systems, particularly their bulkiness. Recent research examines this effect on the initiation and propagation stages of cationic ROP. We conducted a density functional theory study on the precatalyst activation of cationic CL ROP by zirconocene/borate catalysts, where four models of zirconocene precatalysts (CpZrMe (), (MeCp)CpZrMe (), (MeCp)ZrMe (), and IndZrMe ()) were combined with boron cocatalysts B(CF) and [X][B(CF) ] (X = PhC or PhMeNH).
