This is a commentary to a paper recently published in RBMOnline by Macklon and De Vos, in which they argue for a discontinuation of ovarian tissue freezing for fertility preservation in women with breast cancer. Instead, they suggest the use of oocyte vitrification following ovarian stimulation as the preferred method of fertility preservation. This commentary presents nine separate arguments that should be considered in the context of ovarian tissue freezing and fertility preservation in girls and women.

Andrea Bidoli argues that ectogestation could be seen as an emancipatory intervention for women. Specifically, she claims that ectogestation would create unique conditions to reevaluate one's reproductive preference, address certain specific negative social implications of gestation and childbirth, and that it is unfair to hold ectogestation to a higher standard than other innovations such as modern contraceptives and non-medical egg freezing. In this commentary, I claim that Bidoli-like so many others-unjustly bypasses men and their reproductive desires.

This commentary explores how the material-nonmaterial transactions around reproduction among women raise paradoxical questions of reproductive autonomy and commercialization of reproduction. Drawing from medical anthropological studies on human reproduction, the technology around social egg freezing has been conceived to proffer ambivalent possibilities of hope, despair, and repair as mature women recalibrate their reproductive identities, especially in pronatalist contexts.
