Formalin fixation is proved to be the useful tool in the method of age estimation for the taiga ticks collected in field. Formalin does not deform fixed material and does not dissolve fat; hence, it is the best fixing fluid when tick age is estimated by the state of fat reserves in its organism. The ticks preserved in 9% formalin were shown to be suitable for age estimation 1.5-2 months after fixation.

Background: To investigate the trends in Burkitt lymphoma incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years, considering sex and age, from 1990 to 2021, with a 20-year forecast.

Method: Data regarding Burkitt lymphoma were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease study for the year 2021.

Results: Globally, there were 19,072 incident cases of Burkitt lymphoma in 2021.

The substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), one of the main dopaminergic nuclei of the brain, exerts a regulatory function on the basal ganglia circuitry via the nigro-striatal pathway but its possible dopaminergic innervation of the thalamus has been only investigated in non-human primates. The impossibility of tract-tracing studies in humans has boosted advanced MRI techniques and multi-shell high-angular resolution diffusion MRI (MS-HARDI) has promised to shed more light on the structural connectivity of subcortical structures. Here, we estimated the possible dopaminergic innervation of the human thalamus via an MS-HARDI tractography of the SNc in healthy human young adults.

Unlabelled: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) makes an individual prone to bacterial infections. The antimicrobial defence mechanism of neutrophils is orchestrated by Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate Hydrogen (NADPH) oxidative burst which is iron-dependent. The few previous studies documenting a decrease in neutrophil oxidative burst in iron-deficient children have been based mainly on the Nitro blue tetrazolium test (NBT).

Comprehensive evaluation of the toxicological effects of commonly encountered synthetic cathinones using in silico methods.

Toxicol Res (Camb)

February 2025

Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri IRCCS, Milan, Italy.

Synthetic cathinones (SCs), a group of new psychoactive substances (NPS), are designer molecules with hallucinogenic and psychostimulatory effects. Although the structural similarities of SCs to amphetamines suggest that they may have similar toxicity profiles to those of amphetamine congeners, little is known about SCs from a toxicological point of view. In the present study, the toxicity profiles of commonly encountered SCs ( = 65), listed in the 2020 Report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), were evaluated using in silico methods.
