Objective: Hearing and visual impairments are commonly viewed separately in research and service provision, but they often occur together as dual sensory impairment or DSI in older populations. This article examines the frequency and effects of DSI in older age and notes limitations in the evidence.
Methods: Search of electronic databases of published papers.
Results: DSI diminishes communication and well-being and can cause social isolation, depression, reduced independence, mortality, and cognitive impairment.
Discussion: Although intuitively DSI may be expected to have additional impacts over single sensory impairment, research findings are inconclusive. Services and supports required by people with DSI are simply a combination of those required by people with single vision and hearing loss, taking account of the unique communication difficulties posed by DSI.

Neurological recovery in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is multifaceted, involving mechanisms such as remyelination and perilesional spinal neuroplasticity, with cortical reorganization being one contributing factor. Cortical reorganization, in particular, can be evaluated through network (graph) analysis of interregional functional connectivity. Accurate goal-directed behaviour requires the sense of touch to be integrated with information about body position and ongoing motion. Behaviours such as chewing, swallowing and speech critically depend on precise tactile events on a rapidly moving tongue, but neural circuits for dynamic touch-guided tongue control are unknown. Here, using high-speed videography, we examined three-dimensional lingual kinematics as mice drank from a water spout that unexpectedly changed position during licking, requiring re-aiming in response to subtle contact events on the left, centre or right surface of the tongue.

Aim: This study aims to explore the cognitive trajectory changes in middle-aged and older adults individuals with dual sensory impairment (simultaneous visual and hearing impairment) and to identify the predictors of different trajectory changes.
Methods: Based on the longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2013 to 2020, data from 2,369 middle-aged and older adults individuals with dual sensory impairment were selected. A latent variable growth mixture model was constructed to analyze the cognitive function development trajectories in this population and to identify their predictive factors.

Age-dependent sensory impairment, memory loss, and cognitive decline are generally attributed to neuron loss, synaptic dysfunction, and decreased neuronal activities over time. Concurrently, increased neuronal activity is reported in humans and other organisms during aging. However, it is unclear whether neuronal hyperactivity is the cause of cognitive impairment or a compensatory mechanism of circuit dysfunction.
