In March 2011, the Norwegian Institute of Public Health identified a possible outbreak involving 21 cases of Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 infection with similar MLVA-profiles. Preliminary results of epidemiological and microbiological investigations indicate bagged salad mix containing radicchio rosso (also known as Italian chicory) as a possible source. As a result of the investigation, bagged salad mixes of a specific brand were voluntarily withdrawn from the market by the producer.

Fresh produce is usually consumed raw or minimally processed, making it a potential vehicle for the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) microorganisms to humans. The objective of the study was to assess the occurrence of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E and CPE), respectively, in 118 fresh herbs and 101 bagged salads collected at retail level in Switzerland and to characterize the isolates' phenotypic and genotypic properties using culture-based methods and whole genome sequencing (WGS). Of the fresh herbs, 6/118 contained ESBL-E and 7/118 yielded CPE.

In September 2022, the Public Health Agency of Sweden observed an increase in domestic Typhimurium cases through the Swedish electronic notification system, and an outbreak strain was identified with whole genome sequencing. Overall, 109 cases with symptom onset between 17 September and 24 November 2022 were reported from 20 of 21 Swedish regions. The median age of cases was 52 years (range 4-87 years) and 62% were female.

Older adults are vulnerable to foodborne illness; however, many do not follow safe food handling guidelines that would reduce their risk of infection. Virtual focus groups were used to explore older adults' food handling and consumption practices and to understand how to apply the Health Belief Model for food safety research with respect to older adults. Thirty-nine adults between the ages of 56 and 80 participated in the study.

Cyclosporiasis is a diarrheal illness caused by the foodborne parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Annually reported cases have been increasing in the United States prompting development of genotyping tools to aid cluster detection. A recently developed Cyclospora genotyping system based on 8 genetic markers was applied to clinical samples collected during the cyclosporiasis peak period of 2020, facilitating assessment of its epidemiologic utility.
