The vaccinia virus (VACV) precursor membrane, the crescent, consists of an open membrane sheet and is formed by rupture of a cellular compartment. Here, we asked whether A17, a viral membrane protein, plays a role in membrane rupture. Without A17 synthesis, crescents are not formed, and instead, tubular and vesicular membranes accumulate (Rodriguez et al. in J Virol 69:4640-4648, 1). We used electron tomography (ET) to analyze whether the viral membranes lacking A17 consist of open membrane sheets. Tubular, vesicular and so far not described onion-shaped membranes, which consisted of open membrane sheets, were seen. Thus, the data show that membrane rupture occurs independently of the A17 protein.

Control of Synaptotagmin-1 Trafficking by SV2A-Mechanism and Consequences for Presynaptic Function and Dysfunction.

J Neurochem

January 2025

Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences, Hugh Robson Building, George Square, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

Synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) is an abundant synaptic vesicle cargo with an as yet unconfirmed role in presynaptic function. It is also heavily implicated in epilepsy, firstly being the target of the leading anti-seizure medication levetiracetam and secondly with loss of function mutations culminating in human disease. A range of potential presynaptic functions have been proposed for SV2A; however its interaction with the calcium sensor for synchronous neurotransmitter release, synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1), has received particular attention over the past decade.

A series of new arecoline derivatives containing amino acid fragments were synthesized, and their fungicidal activities were investigated. All synthesized compounds were characterized by H NMR, CNMR, and HRMS. Preliminary bioactivity assays demonstrated that Compounds 3k, 3n, 3p, 3q, 3r, and 3s exhibited significant antifungal activity against Botryosphaeria cactivora, Botryosphaeria dothidea, and Fusarium pseudograminearum at a concentration of 100 μg/mL.

Simultaneously Enhanced Permeability and Selectivity of Pebax-1074-Based Mixed-Matrix Membrane for CO Separation.

Membranes (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Materials-Oriented Chemical Engineering, College of Chemical Engineering, Nanjing Tech University, Nanjing 210009, China.

Membrane technology is a promising methodology for carbon dioxide separation due to its benefit of a small carbon footprint. However, the trade-off relationship between gas permeability and selectivity is one obstacle to limiting its application. Herein, branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) containing a rich amino group was successfully grafted on the surface of the metal-organic framework (MOF) of AIFFIVE-1-Ni (KAUST-8) through coordination between N in BPEI and open metal sites in the MOF and with the resultant maintained BET surface area and pore volume.

An Open-Source 3D Printed Three-Fingered Robotic Gripper for Adaptable and Effective Grasping.

Biomimetics (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University, 2066 Seobu-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon 16419, Republic of Korea.

This research focuses on the design of a three-finger adaptive gripper using additive manufacturing and electromechanical actuators, with the purpose of providing a low-cost, efficient, and reliable solution for easy integration with any robot arm for industrial and research purposes. During the development phase, 3D printing materials were employed in the gripper's design, with Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament used for the rigid mechanical components and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) for the flexible membranes that distribute pressure to the resistive force sensors. Stress analysis and simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the components under load and to gradually refine the design of the adaptive gripper.

The global dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 led to a worldwide pandemic in March 2020. Even after the official downgrading of the COVID-19 pandemic, infection with SARS-CoV-2 variants continues. The rapid development and deployment of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines helped to mitigate the pandemic to a great extent.
