In the crystal structure of the title compound, 2C(5)H(5)N(4)O(+)·SO(4) (2-), N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds assemble the mol-ecules into a two-dimensional network structure parallel to the cb plane. The S atom of the sulfate ion lies on a special position on a twofold axis.

The title complex, [Cu(SO(4))(C(6)H(8)N(2))(2)]·H(2)O, was obtained under hydro-thermal conditions. The Cu(II) ion is five-coordinated in a distorted square-pyramidal manner by four N atoms from two benzene-1,2-diamine ligands at the base and one O atom from a monodentate sulfate anion at the apex of the coordination polyhedron. N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding between the amino functions and the sulfate groups leads to the formation of layers parallel to (001).

The effects of sulfate and BHTPMP (Bis (hexamethylene) triaminepentakis (methylene phosphonic acid)) on the crystallization rate, phase composition and morphology of calcium carbonate have been studied. It was observed that sulfate reduces the nucleation rate and favors the formation of aragonite form in the calcium carbonate precipitate. Moreover, in the presence of sulfate the rhombohedral morphology of the calcite crystals is modified, and during the formation of calcite, the development of {104} faces are more significantly prohibited than {110} faces.

The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the carbonyl-containing carotenoid 12'-apo-beta-carotenoic-12'-acid (12'CA) have been used for probing the microscopic environment in various ionic liquids (ILs). The following IL cations were investigated: 1,3-di-n-alkyl-imidazolium featuring different n-alkyl chain lengths and also additional methylation at the C2 position, triethylsulfonium, as well as two tetraalkylammonium ions. These were combined with different anions: [BF4]-, [PF6]-, ethyl sulfate ([EtOSO3]-), and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([Tf2N]-).

A method for the sensitive fluorescent staining of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) gels that extends the applicability and sensitivity of existing procedures has been developed. SDS-protein complexes are able to bind the noncovalent hydrophobic probe, bis(8-p-toluidino-1-naphthalenesulfonate) (bisANS) with an increase in quantum yield that is considerably larger than that observed with the commonly used monomeric form, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (1,8-ANS). The quantum yield of bisANS bound to the SDS-protein complex is greatly enhanced by incubation with one of a number of cations including potassium and barium.
