The title complex, (C(8)H(20)N)[Co(CN)(4)(C(10)H(8)N(2))]·CH(3)CN·1.5H(2)O, consists of tetra-ethyl ammonium cations, mononuclear [Co(III)bpy(CN)(4)](-) anions and uncoordinated water and acetonitrile mol-ecules. The Co(III) atom is six-coordinated by two 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) N atoms and four cyanide C atoms in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The acute bite angle of the chelating bpy [82.28 (8)°] is the main factor accounting for this distortion. In addition, the tetra-ethyl-ammonium cation is significantly disordered [occupancy ratio 0.611 (3):0.389 (3)]. The presence of water mol-ecules, one of which is disordered over two positions about an inversion center, results in the formation of a network of O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds involving the cyanide N atoms.

Functional characterization and mechanism of the multidrug resistance transport potein YoeA in Bacillus subtilis.

Transport proteins are essential for bacterial resistance to antibiotics and toxins, but their mechanisms remain poorly understood in Bacillus subtilis. In the present study, overexpression of yoeA enhanced resistance to various antibiotics, with its expression induced by these antibiotics, especially penicillin and plipastatin. The ΔyoeA strain exhibited significant growth inhibition at 100 μg/mL of plipastatin, while as high as 10,000 μg/mL of iturin/surfactin are required to achieve comparable inhibition, suggesting a higher sensitivity of ΔyoeA to plipastatin.

Halohydrin dehalogenase HheG and its homologues are remarkable enzymes for the efficient ring opening of sterically demanding internal epoxides using a variety of nucleophiles. The enantioselectivity of the respective wild-type enzymes, however, is usually insufficient for application and frequently requires improvement by protein engineering. We herein demonstrate that the highly flexible N-terminal loop of HheG, comprising residues 39 to 47, has a tremendous impact on the activity as well as enantioselectivity of this enzyme in the ring opening of structurally diverse epoxide substrates.

Overcrowded bistricyclic aromatic enes (BAEs) have several conformational isomers, including twisted and -folded conformers. These compounds change color depending on their conformation because each isomer exhibits distinct absorption bands. In this study, we introduced several heteroatoms such as boron and silicon into BAEs to control the energy difference between the twisted and -folded conformers, thereby achieving chromic properties.

Context: The strength and nature of the two halogen bonds in the NCI···CHI···CN halogen-bonded ternary complex are studied in the gas phase via ab initio calculations. Different indicators of halogen bond strength were employed to examine the interactions including geometries, complexation energies, Natural Bond Order (NBO) Wiberg bond indices, and Atoms in Molecules (AIM)-based charge density topological properties. The results show that the halogen bond is strong and partly covalent in nature when CHI donates the halogen bond, but weak and noncovalent in nature when CHI accepts the halogen bond.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the formation of carcinogenic acetonitrile (CHCN) from the reaction of hydroxyl radicals (OH/O) with ethanimine (CHCH=NH) across various environments like interstellar space and combustion systems.
  • Using advanced computational methods, the research outlines the reaction mechanism that leads to CHCN formation, including details on rate constants and branching fractions over a range of temperatures and pressures.
  • Findings suggest that the formation of CHCN occurs efficiently and while its atmospheric lifetime is similar to other pollutants, its overall contribution to global warming is minimal; however, CHCN could potentially react with other atmospheric substances to produce harmful compounds.
