In the title compound, [Mg(C(12)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)][Cr(2)O(7)]·2C(12)H(8)N(2), the cation and anion are situated on a twofold rotation axis. The Mg(II) ion is coordinated by four N atoms from two 1,10-phenanthroline ligands and two O atoms from coordinated water mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Inter-molecular O-H⋯N and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and π-π inter-actions between the aromatic rings [shortest centroid-centroid separation = 3.527 (2) Å] link the cations, anions and 1,10-phenanthroline solvent mol-ecules into a hydrogen-bonded cluster.

The asymmetric unit of the organic-inorganic title salt, (C10H28N4)[Cr2O7]2, comprises one half of an 1,4-bis-(3-ammonio-prop-yl)piperazinediium cation (the other half being generated by the application of inversion symmetry) and a dichromate anion. The piperazine ring of the cation adopts a chair conformation, and the two CrO4 tetra-hedra of the anion are in an almost eclipsed conformation. In the crystal, the cations and anions form a layered arrangement parallel to (001).

The asymmetric unit of the title salt, (C5H7N2)2[Cr2O7], contains four independent cations and two independent dichromate anions. The crystal structure consists of discrete dichromate anions with an eclipsed conformation stacked in layers parallel to (010) at y = 1/4 and y = 3/4. These layers are linked via 4-amino-pyridinium cations by N-H⋯O and weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.

The impact of chromium (Cr) on fish health has been the subject of numerous investigations, establishing a wide spectrum of toxicity, attributed particularly to the hexavalent form [Cr(VI)]. However, reports on the simultaneous assessment of Cr toxicity in fish and its toxico-kinetics, namely involving metal speciation, are scarce.
