Environmental conditions within the home can exacerbate asthmatic children's symptoms. To improve health outcomes among this group, we implemented an in-home environmental public health program-Healthy Homes University--for low-income families in Lansing, Michigan, from 2005 to 2008. Families received four visits during a six-month intervention. Program staff assessed homes for asthma triggers and subsequently provided products and services to reduce exposures to cockroaches, dust mites, mold, tobacco smoke, and other triggers. We also provided asthma education that included identification of asthma triggers and instructions on specific behaviors to reduce exposures. Based on self-reported data collected from 243 caregivers at baseline and six months, the impact of asthma on these children was substantially reduced, and the proportion who sought acute unscheduled health care for their asthma decreased by more than 47%.

Thunderstorm asthma refers to the acute exacerbation of asthma triggered by extreme weather events, which poses life-threatening risks due to severe asthma attacks and strained medical resources. Recent climate changes, including global warming, the greenhouse effect, and increased carbon emissions, have increased the levels of environmental allergens, contributing to a higher incidence of asthma and other allergic diseases. In addition, the increasing frequency of thunderstorms has exacerbated the impact of thunderstorm asthma.

Asthma affects approximately 300 million individuals worldwide and the onset predominantly arises in childhood. Children are exposed to multiple environmental irritants, such as viruses and allergens, that are common triggers for asthma onset, whilst their immune systems are developing in early life. Understanding the impact of allergen exposures on the developing immune system and resulting alterations in lung function in early life will help prevent the onset and progression of allergic asthma in children.

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) and atopic diseases are linked through shared immunological pathways, with allergic triggers often contributing to NS relapses, particularly in immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated pathways. Omalizumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting free and cell-bound IgE, is commonly used in treating atopic diseases. We presented a pediatric case with a history of eczema, asthma, and recurrent atopic rhinitis, who first developed NS at age three, responding well to steroid therapy.

Patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA) can benefit from biologic therapy but some subjects may present an immune-mediated side effect. These patients will not meet the treatment goals and might have an increased risk of exacerbations. Monitoring these patients by determining blood eosinophil (BE) levels could be one of the tools that may allow a follow-up to prevent a worsening of asthma or exacerbations.
