In the field of implantology, peri-implantitis is still a common complication of implant failure. Similar to periodontal disease, this kind of pathological condition is characterized by inflammation of the tissues surrounding dental implants or fillings. The sources of infection have been shown to be chronic periodontitis and poor maintenance of the communion.

Purpose: This mini-review discusses the clinical implication of respiratory pathogens in the biofilm on acrylic resin removable dentures in the elderly.

Methods: A search was conducted using the keywords: "dentures", " acrylic resin", "biofilm", "pneumonia", "elderly", "respiratory pathogens", and "respiratory diseases" in databases PubMed/Medline, Lilacs, SciELO and textbooks between 1999 and 2024.

Results: The elderly are more susceptible to chronic diseases and/or life-threatening infections because of senescence itself and functional and degenerative alterations.

Antibiofilm, Anti-Inflammatory, and Regenerative Properties of a New Stable Ozone-Gel Formulation.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Medical Microbiology Unit, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Perugia, Piazzale Severi, Building D, 4th Floor, 06129 Perugia, Italy.

: Chronic skin wounds are characterized by inflammation, persistent infections, and tissue necrosis. The presence of bacterial biofilms prolongs the inflammatory response and delays healing. Ozone is a potent antimicrobial molecule, and many formulations have been used in the advanced therapeutic treatment of chronic wounds.

Biofilms are a well-known multifactorial virulence factor with a pivotal role in chronic bacterial infections. Their pathogenicity is determined by the combination of strain-specific mechanisms of virulence and the biofilm extracellular matrix (ECM) protecting the bacteria from the host immune defense and the action of antibacterials. The successful antibiofilm agents should combine antibacterial activity and good biocompatibility with the capacity to penetrate through the ECM.

Mechanistic Insights into Succinic Acid as an Adjuvant for Ciprofloxacin in Treating Growing Within Cystic Fibrosis Airway Mucus.

Microorganisms

December 2024

Centre of Biological Engineering, LIBRO-Laboratório de Investigação em Biofilmes Rosário Oliveira, University of Minho, Campus de Gualtar, 4710-057 Braga, Portugal.

is a major cause of chronic respiratory infections in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), with biofilm formation contributing to its persistence and antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to gain insights into the mechanistic action of succinic acid as a ciprofloxacin adjuvant against clinically relevant CF isolates, including small colony variants and mucoid strains, and a ciprofloxacin-resistant strain grown within CF dense mucus. Time-kill assays in artificial CF mucus, along with planktonic and surface-attached biofilm experiments, were used to assess the activity of succinic acid alone and in combination with sublethal ciprofloxacin concentrations.
