Objective: To modify the method of analysis of urinary diethyl phosphate (DEP) in order to determine the relationship between atmospheric ethion concentration and urinary DEP concentration.

Materials And Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted by collecting atmospheric ethion in the breathing zone of 28 farmers following the NIOSH 5600 method. Urine samples were also collected to analyze urinary DEP concentrations by a modified method using a Gas Chromatography-Flame Photometric Detector (FPD).

Results: The average atmospheric ethion concentration in the breathing zone of farmers was 0.036 +/- 0.018 mg/m3. The average urinary DEP in pre-shift and post-shift was 0.030 +/- 0.06 and 0.851 +/- 1.80 mg/g of creatinine respectively. The average DEP during work shifts was 0.53 +/- 0.27, and ranged from 0.12 to 1.16 mg/g of creatinine. A high correlation coefficient (r = 0.645) was found between atmospheric ethion concentrations and urinary DEP concentrations at p < 0.001.

Conclusion: The modified method provided a reliable result and the urinary DEP during work shifts was found to be a reliable biomarker of ethion exposure.

Evidence of the effects of postnatal exposure to organophosphates (OPs) on children's neurodevelopment remains limited but crucial. This cross-sectional study evaluated exposure to OPs and neurobehavioral performance in 172 preschool children. Urinary dialkyl phosphate (DAP) metabolites, biomarkers for exposure to OPs, were measured.

The gut microbiota is a collection of symbiotic microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. Its sensitivity to chemicals with widespread exposure, such as phthalates, is little known. We aimed to investigate the impact of perinatal exposure to phthalates on the infant gut microbiota at 12 months of age.

Phthalates are chemical risk factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, little is known about temporal trends of phthalate exposure and associated health risks among CKD patients. Such information is even scarce for alternative plasticizers. CKD patients were recruited from 2011 to 2020 in Korea ( = 200) and assessed for the temporal changes of both traditional and alternative plasticizer exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and urinary phthalate metabolites, considering the rise of phthalate substitutes and variations in diagnostic approaches.
  • - Analyzing data from 641 participants in the NHANES 2017-2018 database, researchers used three methods to diagnose NAFLD and assessed the concentration of various phthalate metabolites in urine.
  • - Significant correlations were found between NAFLD and certain phthalate metabolites through logistic regression analysis, emphasizing the need for precise diagnostics in understanding NAFLD's development.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the relationship between phthalate exposure and kidney function in adults, analyzing data from 839 participants in the Taiwan Biobank.
  • Researchers measured urinary levels of 10 phthalate metabolites and assessed kidney function through biomarkers like blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
  • Findings revealed significant associations where higher levels of certain phthalate metabolites were linked to impaired kidney function indicators, implying that increased exposure to environmental phthalates may negatively impact kidney health.
