The first case in Japan of 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) was reported in May, with pediatric hospitalization exceeding that of adults. We evaluated six adults hospitalized for 2009 H1N1 respiratory complications and compared the pandemic to seasonal influenza. Hospitalization was due to aggravated asthma in four of the six, two of whom had simultaneous pneumonia probably virus-caused, and two cases of bacterial pneumonia. Among the three seasons examined, the number of adults increased slightly but the hospitalization rate was low in 2009-2010. Respiratory complications such as viral pneumonia were not seen outside of 2009-2010. Attention should therefore be paid to respiratory complications in adults with pandemic 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Background: When coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mitigation efforts waned, viral respiratory infections (VRIs) surged, potentially increasing the risk of postviral invasive bacterial infections (IBIs). We sought to evaluate the change in epidemiology and relationships between specific VRIs and IBIs [complicated pneumonia, complicated sinusitis and invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS)] over time using the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) dataset.
Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of all prospectively collected pediatric (<19 years old) and adult encounters at 58 N3C institutions, stratified by era: pre-pandemic (January 1, 2018, to February 28, 2020) versus pandemic (March 1, 2020, to June 1, 2023).

Background: Adipokines have been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and related complications due to their roles in metabolic regulation and inflammation. However, the relationship between these adipokines and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) remains unclear.
Methods: A case-control study was performed with 198 patients with DPN and 205 T2DM patients without DPN from the Endocrinology Department at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University.

Esophageal stricture is the most common and disabling complication of esophageal injury caused by ingestion of corrosive substances. In our case, the patient developed esophageal stenosis due to ingestion of strong alkaline substances and underwent colon replacement surgery after repeated failed dilation treatments. After surgery, anastomotic stenosis and tracheocolonic fistula occurred successively, and the entire diagnosis and treatment cycle of this disease lasted for more than 20 years.

Background: Premature infants are at high risk for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and secondary infections. This study aims to investigate the association between immunoinflammatory markers-the systemic immune inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NAR)-and the risk of developing RDS in premature infants.
Methods: A total of 2164 premature infants were enrolled in this retrospective study.
