Objectives: This study was done to analyze the frequency of use of acupuncture and other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) methods during labor and to investigate the different characteristics of women being treated with or without acupuncture and CAM methods, as well as try to analyze birth-related outcome measures.
Study Design: Data were analyzed from 409,413 deliveries, registered between 2001 and 2008 by the agency for quality assurance in Hesse (the Hessian Perinatal Registry [HEPE] survey), which made up more than 95% of all deliveries in this German state during the given time period.
Results: Interest in the use of CAM seems to have decreased within the given time period. On average, acupuncture was used in 3.7% (15,345/409,295) of all deliveries and other CAM methods in 4.8% (19,507/409,295). The most important determinant for the use of one or both methods was the type of hospital. It was also found that German women with higher job qualifications were more likely to receive CAM treatment during delivery. Interestingly, application of CAM methods was associated with a higher use of analgesics during labor. The risk status of the pregnancy or the delivery was of minor importance.
Conclusions: This analysis shows that the determinants of CAM use are similar to those in the field of oncology. In order to assess the efficacy of acupuncture or other CAM methods in the field of obstetrics, it seems necessary to extend the HEPE survey to cover these areas.

Background: High quality data is important to understanding epidemiology and supporting improvement efforts in perinatal brain injury. It is not clear which data items relevant to brain injury are captured across UK sources of routinely collected data, nor what needs to be done to ensure that those sources are fit for purpose in improving care.
Methods: We reviewed data dictionaries of four main UK perinatal data sources and consulted a multi-professional group (N = 27) with expertise in neonatal/maternity care, statistics, and clinical negligence.

Accurately calculating the diradical character () of molecular systems remains a significant challenge due to the scarcity of experimental data and the inherent multireference nature of the electronic structure. In this study, various quantum mechanical approaches, including broken symmetry density functional theory (BS-DFT), spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (SF-TDDFT), mixed-reference spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory (MRSF-TDDFT), complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), complete active space second-order perturbation theory (CASPT2), and multiconfigurational pair-density functional theory (MCPDFT), are employed to compute the singlet-triplet energy gaps () and values in Thiele, Chichibabin, and Müller analogous diradicals. By systematically comparing the results from these computational methods, we identify optimally tuned long-range corrected functional CAM-B3LYP in the BS-DFT framework as a most efficient method for accurately and affordably predicting both and values.

Background: The prevalence of labral tears in asymptomatic active adults has been reported, but the prevalence of labral tears and other incidental hip lesions in the asymptomatic active pediatric population remains unclear. Methods: After IRB approval, pediatric patients self-reporting as athletes and presenting with isolated, acute-onset knee pain requiring knee MRI were prospectively recruited to undergo 3T MRI of their asymptomatic contralateral hip (ASx).
