Objective: This study investigated the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cements (GICs) combined with propolis as a natural antimicrobial substance.

Material And Methods: Typified green propolis, as an ethanolic extract (EEP) or in the lyophilized form (powder), was incorporated to specimens of Ketac Fil Plus, ChemFlex and Ketac Molar Easymix GICs. For each test, 8 specimens of each material were prepared. For water sorption and solubility tests, specimens were subjected to dehydration, hydration and redehydration cycles until a constant mass was obtained for each step. Measurements were recorded using a digital balance of 10-4 g precision. For the diametral tensile strength test, specimens were tested in a universal test machine at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed after 24 h storage in deionized water. Data were evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (p<0.05).

Results: The addition of propolis to GIC clearly increased water sorption compared to pure material. Solubility was material-dependent and was not clearly evident. For the diametral tensile strength test, association with propolis altered negatively only Chemflex.

Conclusion: It may be concluded that incorporation of propolis to GICs alters some properties in a material-dependent condition.

Evidence has shown the clear positive effects of nature-based products on biofilm control and improved gingival health. However, most studies have used in vitro models, have tested single natural components, or have not evaluated proteomic changes after treatment. This double-blind, parallel, randomized, and controlled clinical trial evaluated the benefits of a nature-based gel in controlling gingival inflammation and its effects on the proteomic gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) profile.

This study assessed the effectiveness of the local use of green propolis-loaded lipid nanoparticles (GPlnp) as an adjuvant therapy to scaling and root planing (SRP) to manage experimental periodontitis (EP) in ovariectomized rats treated with zoledronate. Ten weeks before the experiment, 48 female rats were ovariectomized. On day 0, a ligature was installed in the lower first molar to induce EP.

Propolis possesses many bioactive compounds that could modulate the gut microbiota and reduce the production of uremic toxins in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effects of propolis on the gut microbiota profile and uremic toxin plasma levels in HD patients. These are secondary analyses from a previous double-blind, randomized clinical study, with 42 patients divided into two groups: the placebo and propolis group received 400 mg of green propolis extract/day for eight weeks.
