We have coated gold nanorods (NRs) with thermoresponsive microgel shells based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM). We demonstrate by simultaneous laser-heating and optical extinction measurements that the Au NR cores can be simultaneously used as fast optothermal manipulators (switchers) and sensitive optical reporters of the microgel state in a fully externally controlled and reversible manner. We support our results with optical modeling based on the boundary element method and 3D numerical analysis on the temperature distribution. Briefly, we show that due to the sharp increase in refractive index resulting from the optothermally triggered microgel collapse, the longitudinal plasmon band of the coated Au NRs is significantly red-shifted. The optothermal control over the pNIPAM shell, and thereby over the optical response of the nanocomposite, is fully reversible and can be simply controlled by switching on and off a NIR heating laser. In contrast to bulk solution heating, we demonstrate that light-triggering does not compromise colloidal stability, which is of primary importance for the ultimate utilization of these types of nanocomposites as remotely controlled optomechanical actuators, for applications spanning from drug delivery to photonic crystals and nanoscale motion.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a common degenerative disease that causes chronic pain and joint dysfunction. However, the current understanding of TMJOA pathogenesis is limited and necessitates further research. Animal models are crucial for investigating TMJOA due to the scarcity of clinical samples.

Spontaneous bubble growths in liquids are usually triggered by rapid changes in pressure or temperature that can lead to liquid gas supersaturation. Here, we report alternative scenarios of the spontaneous growths of bubbles inside a high-saturation-vapor-pressure and high-air-solubility perfluorocarbon liquid (PP1) that were observed under ambient quiescent conditions. First, we investigate spontaneous bubble growth inside the single PP1 phase, which was left to evaporate freely.

Purpose: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is an aggressive soft tissue sarcoma that develops sporadically or in Neurofibromatosis type 1 patients. Its development is marked by the inactivation of specific tumor suppressor genes (TSGs): NF1, CDKN2A and SUZ12EED (Polycomb Repressor Complex 2). Each TSG loss can be targeted by particular drug inhibitors and we aimed to systematically combine these inhibitors, guided by TSG inactivation status, to test their precision medicine potential for MPNSTs.

The discovery of unconventional superconductivity often triggers significant interest in associated electronic and structural symmetry breaking phenomena. For the infinite-layer nickelates, structural allotropes are investigated intensively. Here, using high-energy grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction, we demonstrate how in-situ temperature annealing of the infinite-layer nickelate PrNiO ( ≈ 0) induces a giant superlattice structure.

The compositional heterogeneity of clinopyroxene in products of the 1888-90 eruption at La Fossa of Vulcano has been used to constrain times of the plumbing system reactivation before the eruption. We have also investigated the temporal trend of the SO flux at La Fossa crater since 1978 to gather information about the origin, depths and quantity of magma involved in the recent degassing crises. Petrological data emphasizes migration of deep-seated magmas and their emplacement in the shallow system, clearly supporting the involvement of three distinct phases of mafic replenishments occurred respectively 85-140, 16-35 and 2-7 years before the 1888-90 eruption.
