Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, or NGAL, an acute phase protein, is part of the lipocalin family. NGAL is highly induced in inflammatory conditions and ischemia, and is a critical component of innate immunity to bacterial infection. Recently, NGAL has been proven as an emerging biomarker for predicting acute kidney injury (AKI). Meanwhile, numerous studies have also demonstrated that NGAL may be a potential biomarker for the diagnosis, prediction, prevention, and prognosis of non--AKI diseases such as chronic kidney diseases, vascular disorders, cancer, preeclampsia, and allergies. This article systematically reviews the clinical utilities of NGAL as a new biomarker for non--AKI diseases.

Introduction: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) increases the life expectancy of persons living with HIV (PLWH), but not without potentially serious adverse effects. Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) can cause nephrotoxicity, manifesting as acute kidney injury (AKI) that may persist after treatment discontinuation. Kidney injury biomarkers such as kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP-4), interleukin-18 (IL-18), and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) can aid early diagnosis and predict TDF-associated nephrotoxicity.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of acute kidney injury following exposure to contrast media. We evaluated the effect of melatonin, a potent antioxidant, as a protective strategy against contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), with a focus on molecular mechanisms. We randomized patients with an eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of dexmedetomidine preemptive analgesia in patients undergoing mastectomy.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, including 236 patients who underwent breast tumor resection. Of these, 131 patients in the control group received routine postoperative intravenous patient-controlled analgesia, while 105 patients in the preemptive analgesia group received dexmedetomidine preemptive analgesia during surgery.

Background: Development of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with sepsis is associated with increased mortality, highlighting the importance of early detection and management. However, baseline creatinine or urine output measurements are required for AKI diagnosis, which can be challenging in emergency departments (EDs). We aimed to evaluate the association between urinary biomarkers and the AKI diagnosis or 30-day survival status in patients with sepsis in the ED.

Objectives: To study neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in peripheral blood in SLE, and to propose a mechanism by which neutrophils secrete NGAL on stimulation with immune complexes (IC).
Methods: NGAL was measured by ELISA in two independent Swedish SLE cohorts acting as exploratory and validation cohort (n=124 and n=308, respectively), disease controls (n=38) and healthy controls (n=77). NGAL levels were measured in supernatant from IC-stimulated neutrophils in the presence or absence of a toll-like receptor 8 inhibitor (TLR8i).
