Decompression sickness (DCS) is classified on the basis of which organ system is affected, and neurological DCS is considered more severe than DCS in joints and skin with respect to response to recompression treatment and risk of long-term sequelae. Gas bubble formation interstitially in the tissues or in the circulation is considered to be the mechanism for all types of DCS. Ten patients diagnosed as having DCS in joints or skin, by doctors experienced in diving medicine, underwent clinical examination by a neurologist and had an electroencephalogram. Eight of the ten subjects had findings suggesting central nervous system deficits. The findings indicate that DCS of the central nervous system often accompanies DCS of the joints and skin, and that local skin and joint symptoms may draw attention away from cerebral symptoms. We recommend that all cases with DCS should initially be treated as neurological DCS.

In this work we present a near-infrared (NIR)-operated nanoswitch based on chitosan nanoparticles (EpCAM-CS-co-PNVCL@IR780/IMQ NPs) that induces cascade immunogenic tumor ferroptosis via cytokine storm. The formulation was prepared by loading a photosensitiser (IR780) and an immunotherapeutic drug (imiquimod; IMQ) into temperature- and pH-responsive chitosan-based NPs functionalized with tumor-targeting aptamers. The EpCAM aptamer can chaperone the NPs selectively into cancer cells, and allow them to enter the cell nucleus.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, leading to synovial inflammation and hyperplasia, which subsequently causes joint pain, swelling, and damage. The microenvironment of RA is characterized by hypoxia, high reactive oxygen species (ROS), low pH, and levels of high inflammatory factors. Traditional treatments only partially alleviate symptoms and often cause various adverse reactions with long-term use.

Tumor whole-cell vaccines are designed to introduce a wide range of tumor-associated antigens into the body to counteract the immunosuppression caused by tumors. In cases of lymphoma of which the specific antigen is not yet determined, the tumor whole-cell vaccine offers distinct advantages. However, there is still a lack of research on an effective preparation method for the lymphoma whole-cell vaccine.

Checkpoint inhibitor therapies do not benefit all patients, and adjuvants play a critical role in boosting immune responses for effective cancer immunotherapy. However, their systemic toxicity and suboptimal activation kinetics pose significant challenges. Here, this study presented a linker-based strategy to modulate the activation kinetics of Toll-like receptor 7/8 (TLR7/8) agonists delivered via poly (propylene sulfide) nanoparticles (PPS NPs).

Immunotherapy has emerged as a highly promising strategy in the realm of cancer treatment, wherein immunogenic cell death (ICD) is considered a potential trigger for anti-tumor immunity by inducing adaptive immunity to dying cell antigens. This process is often accompanied by the exposure, active secretion, or passive release of a large number of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which activate dendritic cells (DCs) and enhance their antigen-presenting capacity. Subsequently, it promotes the recruitment and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, ultimately leading to tumor growth inhibition.
