Background And Objective: The early detection and early treatment of high-risk pulmonary nodules directly affect the long-term survival rate of patients. However, conventional nodule localization methods, such as hook-wire, technetium-99m, and methylene blue are associated with issues such as a high-frequency of complications, low patient tolerance, serious side effects, and inability to identify pigmented lungs. For patients who require segmentectomy, there is often a lack of effective path planning, resulting in insufficient resection margins or excessive loss of lung function.

Exposure to ionizing radiation, accidental or intentional, may lead to delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) that manifest as injury to organ systems, including the kidney, heart, and brain. This study examines the role of activated protein C (APC), a known mitigator of radiation-induced early toxicity, in long-term plasma metabolite and lipid panels that may be associated with DEARE in APCHi mice. The APCHi mouse model used in the study was developed in a C57BL/6N background, expressing the D168F/N173K mouse analog of the hyper-activatable human D167F/D172K protein C variant.

Background: Keratoconus (KCN) is a common ectatic disorder of the cornea. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is used as an effective option to slowdown the disease progression. Although CXL is considered a safe procedure, corneal endothelial damage, especially in corneal thickness of less than 400 μm, has been reported.

[Ramadan fasting during treatment with external beam radiotherapy].

Bull Cancer

March 2022

CHU Ibn Rochd, service de radiothérapie, Casablanca, Maroc.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores fasting practices among Muslim cancer patients undergoing external radiation therapy during Ramadan, aiming to understand how they manage fasting alongside treatment.
  • - Conducted at Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca, the research included 209 patients, revealing that while most fasted before their cancer diagnosis, only 39.2% continued to fast during treatment, with only 40% discussing this with their oncologist.
  • - The results indicate that disease stage was the main factor influencing fasting decisions, highlighting a need for further research on the effects of fasting during cancer treatment to provide better guidance for patients.
