We study diffusion of pointlike particles biased toward the x axis by a quadratic potential U(x,y)=κ(x)y². This system mimics a channel with soft walls of some varying (effective) cross section A(x), depending on the stiffness κ(x). We show that diffusion in this geometry can also be mapped rigorously onto the longitudinal coordinate x by a procedure known for channels with hard walls [P. Kalinay and J. K. Percus, Phys. Rev. E 74, 041203 (2006)]; i.e., we arrive at a one-dimensional evolution equation of the Fick-Jacobs type. On the other hand, the calculation presented serves as a prototype for mapping of the Smoluchowski equation with a wide class of potentials U(x,y) varying in both the longitudinal as well as the transverse directions, which is necessary for understanding, e.g., stochastic resonance.

A 15 month-monitoring of biofouling in relationship with hydrological parameters and contaminants in three French harbours of the English Channel.

Three French harbours connected to different water masses of the English Channel were chosen to investigate the hydrological parameters, chemical contaminants, and biofouling characteristics for 15 months. The biofouling development on two kinds of coatings, an anticorrosion coating (Epoxy) and a foul-release coating (FRC), was studied to compare micro- and macro- biofouling in harbour environments. Biofouling was investigated by considering wet biofouling biomass and composition, microalgae concentration, and bacterial abundance.

Microfluidic Integration of Magnetically Functionalized Microwires for Flow Cytometry Protein Quantification.

Materials (Basel)

Life Sciences Division, National Research Council of Canada, 75 de Mortagne Boulevard, Boucherville, QC J4B 6Y4, Canada.

A novel approach to protein quantification utilizing a microfluidic platform activated by a magnetic assembly of functionalized magnetic beads around soft magnetic capture centers is presented. Functionalized magnetic beads, known for their high surface area and facile manipulation under external magnetic fields, are injected inside microfluidic channels and immobilized magnetically on the surface of glass-coated soft magnetic microwires placed along the symmetry axis of these channels. A fluorescent (Cy5) immunomagnetic sandwich ELISA is then performed by sequentially flowing the sample and all necessary reagents in the microfluidic channels.

This review evaluates needle navigation technologies in minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery (MICS), identifying their strengths and limitations and the requirements for an ideal needle navigation system that features optimal guidance and easy adoption in clinical practice. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and IEEE databases up until June 2024 identified original studies on needle navigation in MICS. Eligible studies were those published within the past decade and that performed MICS requiring needle navigation technologies in adult patients.

Adsorption behaviors are typically examined through adsorption isotherms, which measure the average adsorption amount as a function of partial pressure or time. However, this method is incapable of identifying inhomogeneities across the adsorbent, which may occur in the presence of strong intermolecular interactions of the adsorbate. In this study, we visualize the adsorption of molecular iodine (I) in the metal-organic framework material MFM-300(Sc) using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM).

Ectopic calcifications occur in tendons, ligaments, entheses, muscles, and fasciae, and are often associated with pain and inflammation. In clinical settings, these calcifications are commonly treated by physical therapy and/or surgical interventions. However, there is not enough understanding of pharmacological treatments as primary cures, supportive therapy to physical or surgical treatment, or even preventive measures to avoid or diminish the development of ectopic calcifications.
