We study multiband semiconducting nanowires proximity-coupled with an s-wave superconductor. We show that, when an odd number of subbands are occupied, the system realizes a nontrivial topological state supporting Majorana modes. We study the topological quantum phase transition in this system and calculate the phase diagram as a function of the chemical potential and magnetic field. Our key finding is that multiband occupancy not only lifts the stringent constraint of one-dimensionality but also allows one to have higher carrier density in the nanowire, and as such multisubband nanowires are better suited for observing the Majorana particle. We study the robustness of the topological phase by including the effects of the short- and long-range disorder. We show that there is an optimal regime in the phase diagram ("sweet spot") where the topological state is to a large extent insensitive to the presence of disorder.

The BiS -based layered superconductors with structures similar to those of cuprates and iron-based superconductors have stimulated much research interest. Here, a new quaternary compound is reported, Bi O S Cl, which crystalizes in a tetragonal structure with P4/mmm (No. 123) space group having alternately stacking unique BiS layers and Bi O layers along the c-axis with a Cl atom located at the center of the unit cell.

In various ferroelectric-based photovoltaic materials after low-band-gap engineering, the process by which high-field polarization induces the depolarizing electric field () to accelerate the electron-hole pair separation in the visible light photocatalytic process is still a great challenge. Herein, a series of semiconducting KN-based ferroelectric catalytic materials with narrow multi-band gaps and high-field polarization capabilities are obtained through the Ba, Ni, and Bi co-doping strategy. Stable caused by high-field poling enhanced the visible photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in a 0.

We theoretically demonstrate a switchable multichannel near-infrared absorber in a composite structure based on vanadium dioxide nanoparticles embedded between two and one-dimensional photonic crystal mirrors. A switching of absorption behavior is induced through the reversible semiconductor-to-metal phase transition of vanadium dioxide nanoparticles via its temperature-dependent permittivity-thermo-optical effect. This behavior leads to a multi-wavelength reconfigurable optical response of the proposed structure from poorly absorbing to highly absorbing.

Single-crystalline SnSe has attracted much attention because of its record high figure-of-merit ≈ 2.6; however, this high has been associated with the low mass density of samples which leaves the intrinsic of fully dense pristine SnSe in question. To this end, we prepared high-quality fully dense SnSe single crystals and performed detailed structural, electrical, and thermal transport measurements over a wide temperature range along the major crystallographic directions.

One of the simplest proposed experimental probes of a Majorana bound state is a quantized (2e(2)/h) value of zero-bias tunneling conductance. When temperature is somewhat larger than the intrinsic width of the Majorana peak, conductance is no longer quantized, but a zero-bias peak can remain. Such a nonquantized zero-bias peak has been recently reported for semiconducting nanowires with proximity induced superconductivity.
