 - a large-scale dataset of 3D medical shapes for computer vision.

Biomed Tech (Berl)

December 2024

Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), University Hospital Essen (AöR), Essen, Germany.

Objectives: The shape is commonly used to describe the objects. State-of-the-art algorithms in medical imaging are predominantly diverging from computer vision, where voxel grids, meshes, point clouds, and implicit surface models are used. This is seen from the growing popularity of ShapeNet (51,300 models) and Princeton ModelNet (127,915 models).

The study examines the morphometric development of the anterior cranial fossa in human fetuses and its clinical implications. The anterior cranial fossa, crucial for protecting the frontal lobes, was analyzed during prenatal development using innovative computer image processing techniques. We hypothesized that the growth of the anterior cranial fossa is not uniform throughout fetal development and that changing geometric relationships are important for possible therapeutic interventions in cases of congenital defects.

A comparative study of experimental and simulated ultrasound beam propagation through cranial bones.

Phys Med Biol

December 2024

Department of Medical Physics and Bioengineering, University College London, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND.

Transcranial ultrasound is used in a variety of treatments, including neuromodulation, opening the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapies. To ensure safety and efficacy of these treatments, numerical simulations of the ultrasound field within the brain are used for treatment planning and evaluation. This study investigates the accuracy of numerical modelling of the propagation of focused ultrasound through cranial bones.

Objective: Globally, skull base tumors are among the most challenging tumors to treat and are known for their significant morbidity and mortality. Hence, this study aimed to identify robust associated factors that contribute to mortality of patients following surgical resection for a variety of skull base tumors at the 3-month follow-up period. This in turn helps devise an evidence-based meticulous treatment strategy and baseline input for quality improvement work.
