This paper is concerned with the uses of history in science. It focuses in particular on Anglo-American genetics and on university textbooks--where the canon of a science is consolidated, as the heterogeneous approaches and controversies of its practice are rendered unified for its reproduction. Tracing the emergence and eventual standardization of geneticists' use of a case-based method of teaching in the 1920s-1950s, this paper argues that geneticists created historical environments in their textbooks-spaces in which students developed an understanding of the laws of genetics through simulations of their discovery and use. Witnessing the unfolding of Mendel's and Morgan's experiments and performing genetic crosses on paper, students learned not only the rules that were explicitly taught as such, but also the experientially-based, tacit skills needed to find and follow these rules. This didactic system taught them how to go on when confronting new situations, and in doing so, provided geneticists with an important disciplinary tool, freeing the first steps of their student's enculturation from the physical infrastructure of the laboratory.

In the setting of monogenic disease, advances made in genome editing technologies can, in principle, be deployed as a therapeutic strategy to precisely correct a specific gene mutation in an affected cell type and restore functionality. Using the β-hemoglobinopathies and hemophilia as exemplars, we review recent experimental breakthroughs utilizing CRISPR-derived genome editing technology that have translated to significant improvements in the management of inherited hematologic disorders. Yet there are also challenges facing the use of CRISPR mediated genome editing in these patients and we discuss possible ways to obviate those issues for furtherance of clinical benefit.

Introduction: Surgery is a cognitive discipline whose practitioners characteristically use technology during operations for patients. With accelerating technological innovation throughout society and healthcare, we sought to develop a shared position for Irish surgery via a commissioned work programme by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Methods: Using Stanford design principles, representative clinical specialty and academic leads and higher trainee representatives across 15 specialties were surveyed regarding sentiments, perspectives and concerns regarding now and near future technology in clinical practice, career considerations and training/education.

Chronic or persistent non-cancer pain disproportionately affects Māori - the Indigenous population of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and their whānau (family and significant others). In a previous study with a Māori community service provider - Tū Kotahi Māori Asthma and Research Trust - Tū Kotahi, identified a need for a Kaupapa Māori (by Māori, for Māori) pain management programme (PMP) with embedded principles of Whānau Ora (care focusing on the wellbeing of the individual and their significant others as a collective). Using a qualitative case-study design, the main aims were to describe (1) the implementation of a community-based, whānau-focused PMP; (2) the participant experiences of the programme.
