Antibiotic-responsive diarrhea in small animals.

Published: March 2011

Antibiotic-responsive diarrhea (ARD) is an idiopathic syndrome causing chronic diarrhea in young, large-breed dogs. Why antibiotics are effective in controlling diarrhea is not understood, and whether small intestinal bacterial numbers are truly increased is now doubted, but previous focus on the condition being small intestinal bacterial overgrowth has hampered the understanding of this condition. The name ARD simply defines the condition, and studies are now looking at the interaction of small intestinal bacteria and the mucosa to try to understand why it occurs.

Deletion of metal transporter Zip14 reduces major histocompatibility complex II expression in murine small intestinal epithelial cells.

Documented worldwide, impaired immunity is a cardinal signature resulting from loss of dietary zinc, an essential micronutrient. A steady supply of zinc to meet cellular requirements is regulated by an array of zinc transporters. Deletion of the transporter Zip14 (Slc39a14) in mice produced intestinal inflammation.

Postnatal establishment of enteric metabolic, host-microbial and immune homeostasis is the result of precisely timed and tightly regulated developmental and adaptive processes. Here, we show that infection with the invasive enteropathogen Typhimurium results in accelerated maturation of the neonatal epithelium with premature appearance of antimicrobial, metabolic, developmental, and regenerative features of the adult tissue. Using conditional Myd88-deficient mice, we identify the critical contribution of immune cell-derived mediators.

We describe a case of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) with sigmoid colon stricture. The patient, a woman in her 30 s, had a 12-year history of ileocolitis-type Crohn's disease. The colonoscope could not pass because of the sigmoid colon stricture, and the patient was referred to our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and fever.

Comparative Study of Duodenal Histology in Three Lamb Breeds Fed Two Different Rations.

Vet Med Sci

January 2025

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Animal Breeding and Husbandry, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Samsun, Turkey.

Background: Ration composition may significantly impact the nutrient absorption, duodenal parameters, intestinal health and feed efficiency of animals.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to analyse the impact of concentrate- and forage-based diets on essential morphological parameters of the duodenum, including villus height, villus width, crypt depth and goblet cell density, in three different lamb breeds.

Methods: Forty-five lambs, aged between 2.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with the two predominant endophenotypes-Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC)-represents a group of chronic gastrointestinal inflammatory conditions. Since most genetic associations with IBD are often limited to independent subtypes, we reported a genome-wide association study (GWAS) cross-trait analysis combined with CD and UC to enhance statistical power. Initially, we detected 256 association signals at 54 genomic susceptibility loci and further characterized the functionality of variants within these regions.
