Gender inequalities in prescribing and initiation patterns of guideline-recommended drugs after acute myocardial infarction.

BMC Public Health

January 2025

Grupo de Investigación en Servicios Sanitarios de Aragón (GRISSA), Fundación Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Aragón (IIS Aragón), Zaragoza, Spain.

Background: European guidelines recommend the prescription of certain drugs after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The existence of gender differences in pharmacological treatment after an AMI has been described. This study aims to describe and analyse, using real-world data (RWD), whether there are gender differences in the prescribing patterns and initiation of treatment in secondary prevention after a first AMI, and which are the factors that explain these differences.

Unlabelled: The combination of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with outflow tract obstruction, severe pre-capillary and post-capillary pulmonary hypertension, and severe primary mitral regurgitation is rare and presents distinct management challenges.

Background And Clinical Significance: Pulmonary hypertension is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy managed medically and often precludes patients from undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass due to increased surgical morbidity and mortality. In studies specifically evaluating surgical myectomy, however, survival is favorable in patients with moderate-to-severe pulmonary hypertension.

Determinants of COVID-19 vaccination coverage in European and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

Front Public Health

January 2025

Centre for Health Economics Research and Modelling Infectious Diseases, Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute, University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium.

Introduction: In relatively wealthy countries, substantial between-country variability in COVID-19 vaccination coverage occurred. We aimed to identify influential national-level determinants of COVID-19 vaccine uptake at different COVID-19 pandemic stages in such countries.

Methods: We considered over 50 macro-level demographic, healthcare resource, disease burden, political, socio-economic, labor, cultural, life-style indicators as explanatory factors and coverage with at least one dose by June 2021, completed initial vaccination protocols by December 2021, and booster doses by June 2022 as outcomes.

Neural deterioration and compensation in visual short-term memory among individuals with amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

Alzheimers Dement

January 2025

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Brain Function and Disease, Center for Brain and Mental Well-Being, Department of Psychology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Introduction: Visual short-term memory (VSTM) is a critical indicator of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but whether its neural substrates could adapt to early disease progression and contribute to cognitive resilience in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) has been unclear.

Methods: Fifty-five aMCI patients and 68 normal controls (NC) performed a change-detection task and underwent multimodal neuroimaging scanning.

Results: Among the atrophic brain regions in aMCI, VSTM performance correlated with the volume of the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) but not the medial temporal lobe (MTL), and this correlation was mainly present in patients with greater MTL atrophy.
