Excitation-emission polarization spectroscopy of single light harvesting complexes.

Excitation and emission polarization dependence of fluorescence intensity of single LH2 complexes from Rhodopseudomonas acidophila 10050 and Rhodobacter sphaeroides is reported. The results are presented as two-dimensional polarization plots and interpreted in terms of tilted light harvesting complexes indicating that sample preparation leads to partially oriented LH2 cylinders. An alternative explanation of the observation can be structural deformation. Fluorescence intensity of the complexes has four qualitatively distinct excitation-emission polarization dependencies. The differences in excitation polarization dependence are interpreted as due to the tilt of the complexes, whereas the emission polarization behavior is mainly determined by spectral inhomogeneity of the emitting B850 ring. Some complexes show abrupt reversible variations of the total emission intensity together with changes of the polarization properties which cannot be described by the simplest model of tilted LH2s with spectral disorder.

The interaction between extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in municipal sludge and antibiotics in wastewater is critical in wastewater treatment, resource recovery, and sludge management. Therefore, it is increasingly urgent to investigate the distribution coefficient (Log K) of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in EPS, particularly in sludge-derived dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and aqueous phase systems. Herein, through balance experiments, the concentrations of SAs were determined using alkaline extraction EPS (AEPS) and alginate-like extracellular polymer (ALE) systems, and the Log K values were determined.

Variations in molecular weight distributions of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and PARAFAC-derived fluorescent components were investigated along a transect in the seasonally hypereutrophic lower Fox River-Green Bay using the one-sample PARAFAC approach coupling flow field-flow fractionation for size-separation with fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) and PARAFAC analysis. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen, chromophoric-DOM, specific UV absorbance at 254 nm, and humification index all decreased monotonically from river to open bay, showing a strong river-dominated DOM source and a dynamic change in DOM quality along the river-lake transect. The relative abundance of colloidal DOM (>1 kDa) derived from ultrafiltration exhibited minimal variation, averaging 71 ± 4 % of the bulk DOM, across the entire estuarine transect although the colloidal concentration decreased in general.

With the recent focus on using advanced water treatment processes for water reuse, interest is growing for utilizing enhanced coagulation to remove dissolved chemical species. Up to 85% of the nitrogen in wastewater effluent is made up of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), but there is a knowledge gap regarding its removal during coagulation, which can be influenced by DON characteristics. To address this issue, tertiary-treated wastewater samples were analyzed before and after coagulation with polyaluminum chloride and ferric chloride.

Several hybrid halide 2D-perovskite species emit light with an emergent and controversial broadband emission Stokes-shifted down from the narrow band emission. This paper uncovers the sub- and above-bandgap emission and absorption characteristics of PEAPbI prepared with gap states introduced during single crystal growth. Here, gap states led to coexistent intrinsic and heterostructured electronic frameworks that are selectively accessible with ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) light, respectively, resulting in the phenomenon of photoluminescence (PL) switching from narrowband green to broadband red.
