We describe how the association between an ytterbium ion and a ruthenium carbon-rich complex enables the first switching of the near-IR Yb(III) luminescence by taking advantage of the redox commutation of the carbon-rich antenna.

Drug repurposing refers to excavating clinically approved drugs for new clinical indications, effectively shortening the cost and time of clinical evaluation due to the established molecular structure, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. In this sense, clinically approved Prussian blue (PB) has received considerable attention, by virtue of its unique optical, magnetic, and enzymatic performance. Nevertheless, the clinical transformation of PB-based nanodrugs remains restricted owing to their complex synthetic formulation and constrained therapeutic performance.

Toxic effects in terms of mitochondria and hereditary substances have been characterized in vitro for individual rare earth elements, while, the joint effects of mixed elements exposure in the population remain ambiguous. Based on the Occupational Chromate Exposure Dynamic Cohort of China, this study investigated the relationship between 15 blood rare earth elements (cerium, dysprosium, erbium, europium, gadolinium, holmium, lanthanum, lutetium, neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, terbium, thulium, yttrium, and ytterbium) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (MtDNACN) as well as peripheral blood lymphocyte micronucleus frequency (MNF). The elastic net was used to select elements highly correlated with effect indicators, whose dose-response relationships were further illustrated by restricted cubic splines.

The lanthanide series elements are transition metals used as critical components of electronics, as well as rechargeable batteries, fertilizers, antimicrobials, contrast agents for medical imaging, and diesel fuel additives. With the surge in their utilization, lanthanide metals are being found more in our environment. However, little is known about the health effects associated with lanthanide exposure.

Lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (Ln-UCNPs) have been considered promising materials for various fields, such as biomedical and industrial applications. However, data and reports regarding its toxicity and environmental risks are scarce. Under these circumstances, data must be obtained to fully understand potential toxicity and adverse outcome pathways.

A sample mixture of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) was measured by femtosecond laser ionization mass spectrometry (fsLIMS) using the fifth (206 nm) and fourth (257 nm) harmonic emissions of an ytterbium (Yb) laser (1030 nm). Molecular ions were observed as the major signals in this technique, providing valuable information concerning the molecular weight and the number of double bonds in the molecule. The mass spectral data were then used as explanatory variables in machine learning based on artificial intelligence (AI) to correlate with objective variables such as the cetane number, kinematic viscosity, specific gravity, a higher heating value, an iodine value, flash point, oxidative stability index, and a cloud point measured for reference biofuel samples containing various FAMEs.
