Oxidative stress is influenced by the thiol homeostasis, which determines the redox milieu. One of its components is Cysteinyl-glycine (Cys-Gly) generation, as its metabolic precursor is the free radicals scavenging glutathione. Levodopa is under suspicion to promote oxidative stress via the turnover of its metabolite dopamine in abundant mitochondria. Objective was to investigate the impact of levodopa on Cys-Gly plasma metabolism. Fifteen patients with Parkinson's disease orally took one 200-mg levodopa/50-mg carbidopa (CD) containing tablet. Levodopa, its derivative 3-O-methyldopa (3-OMD), and free Cys-Gly were measured at baseline, 60 and 120 min following levodopa/CD administration. Cys-gly concentrations decreased, levodopa and 3-OMD levels increased. Inverse relationships appeared between computed differences of Cys-gly and 3-OMD bioavailability. We conclude that Cys-Gly decline is related to levodopa metabolism to 3-OMD. Cys-Gly decay may result from the alternative transformation of glutathione to its oxidized form glutathione dissulfide as consequence of free radical scavenging.

The use of cell lines as alternative models for environmental physiology studies opens a new window of possibilities and is becoming an increasingly used tool in marine research to fulfil the 3R's rule. In this study, an embryonic monoclonal stem cell line obtained from a marine teleost (gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata) was employed to assess the effects of photoperiod (light/dark cycles vs constant dark) and light spectrum (white, blue, green, blue/green and red lights) on gene expression and rhythms of cellular markers of proliferation, DNA repair, apoptosis and cellular/oxidative stress by RT-qPCR and cosinor analyses. The results obtained revealed the optimal performance of cells under blue light (LDB), with all the genes analysed showing their highest RNA expression levels and most robust daily variations/rhythms in this condition.

Air pollution is a global environmental health hazard associated with elevated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to various air pollutants, specifically particulate matter (PM), ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM), and diesel exhaust particles, may exacerbate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. PM exposure can directly impair cardiomyocyte survival under ischemic conditions by inducing inflammation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and dysregulation of non-coding RNAs.

Gastric ulcers (GUs) represent a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by mucosal damage and inflammation, often precipitated by factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection and the consumption of COX inhibitors. This comprehensive review investigates the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of GUs and assesses the potential therapeutic effects of Punica granatum (pomegranate, Pg) supplementation. Utilizing a series of experimental models, including indomethacin, aspirin, and alcohol-induced ulcers, we demonstrate that Pg extracts possess significant gastroprotective properties.
