Published: April 2011

A new flavane glucoside, 7,2'-dihydroxy-8-hydroxyethyl-4'-methoxyflavane-2'-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (3), along with three known flavonoids, 7,2'-dihydroxy-8-prenyl-4'-methoxyflavane (1), euchrenone a(7) (2), and 7,2'-dihydroxy-8-prenyl-4'-methoxy-2'-O-β-d-glucopyranosylflavane (4), was isolated from silkworm droppings. The structures of the compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses and optical rotational characteristics. The compounds isolated from silkworm droppings were evaluated for their effects on heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) activity. Compounds 1 and 3 increased the expression of HO-1 in HepG2 cells. HO-1 is an antioxidant enzyme that catabolizes heme to carbon monoxide, free iron, and biliverdin, all of which are involved in the suppression of inflammatory mediators.

Starting with the relationship between mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings as food and metabolites, this study systematically compared the chemical components, screened out differential components, and quantitatively analyzed the main differential components based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and UPLC-Q-TRAP-MS combined with principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA). Moreover, the in vitro enzymatic transformation of the representative differential components was studied. The results showed that(1) 95 components were identified from mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings, among which 27 components only exist in mulberry leaves and 8 components in silkworm droppings.

This study investigated the diffusion and enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogens via the transmission chain (mulberry leaves - silkworm guts - silkworm feces - soil) near a manganese mine restoration area (RA) and control area (CA, away from RA). Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs was testified by an IncP a-type broad host range plasmid RP4 harboring ARGs (tetA) and conjugative genes (e.g.

Without the help of compression-based cooling systems, natural creatures have to make use of other things to decrease their body temperature to survive under thermally harsh conditions. This work finds that the silkworm cocoon of protects pupae from the rapid temperature fluctuations via the randomly stacked silk fibers, which possess high solar reflectance and thermal emittance for thermal regulation. Inspired by this microstructure, the melt-blown polypropylene (MB-PP) with randomly stacked fibers is fabricated by a large-scale melt-blown fabrication method.

Silkworm droppings are the product of mulberry leaves digested by silkworm intestines, which are an important medicinal resource in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The contents of total fat, fat acids, crude protein, amino acids, and secondary metabolites of obtained mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings were analyzed by HPLC, GC-MS, and UHPLC-Q-TOF MS. The target genes and enriched pathways related to significantly changed compositions between mulberry leaves and silkworm droppings were analyzed by network pharmacology.

The regenerated silk fibroin (RSF)-based microfluidic device has attracted tremendous interests in recent years due to its excellent biocompatibility, mild processing conditions, and all aqueous casting production. However, the need of a micro-fabricated mold in the manufacture process greatly hinder its practical applications. Herein, we introduce an adhesive tape-assisted etching method with LiBr solution as the etchant to prepare RSF microfluidic devices.
