Previous research has linked attentional effects (such as inhibition of return; IOR) to serial visual search. We investigated different modes of visual search (serial vs. parallel) and demonstrated that the attentional set induced by the type of search greatly influences these attentional effects. IOR was linked to serial search while facilitation followed parallel search. Event related potentials and LORETA source localization data demonstrated that facilitation was associated with a single component, localized in the cuneus and precuneus, while IOR was related to three different components, involving the superior parietal lobe (at around 200 ms), the anterior cingulate cortex and bilateral medial frontal gyrus (~240 ms), and the bilateral superior temporal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus and inferior parietal gyrus (~280 ms). Our results are consistent with the notion that attentional set determines spatial orienting and with previous studies proposing that IOR is not observed in all previously attended locations.

It is well established that when we hold more content in working memory, we are slower to act upon part of that content when it becomes relevant for behavior. Here, we asked whether this load-related slowing is due to slower access to the sensory representations held in working memory (as predicted by serial working-memory search), or by a reduced preparedness to act upon those sensory representations once accessed. To address this, we designed a visual-motor working-memory task in which participants memorized the orientation of two or four colored bars, of which one was cued for reproduction.

This study investigates the optimization of wind energy integration in hybrid micro grids (MGs) to address the rising demand for renewable energy, particularly in regions with limited wind potential. A comprehensive assessment of wind energy potential was conducted, and optimal sizing of standalone MGs incorporating photovoltaic (PV) systems, wind turbines (WT), and battery storage (BS) systems was performed for six regions in the Kingdom Saudi Arabia. Wind resource analysis utilizing the Weibull distribution function shows that all regions exhibited Class 1 wind energy characteristics, with average annual wind power densities ranging from 36.

We report the use of streaming data interfaces to perform fully online data processing for serial crystallography experiments, without storing intermediate data on disk. The system produces Bragg reflection intensity measurements suitable for scaling and merging, with a latency of less than 1 s per frame. Building on the algorithmic equivalence between finite population replicator dynamics and particle filtering based approximation of Bayesian inference, we design a computational model to demonstrate the emergence of Darwinian evolution over representational units when collectives of units are selected to infer statistics of high-dimensional combinatorial environments. The non-Darwinian starting point is two units undergoing a few cycles of noisy, selection-dependent information transmission, corresponding to a serial (one comparison per cycle), non-cumulative process without heredity. Selection for accurate Bayesian inference at the collective level induces an adaptive path to the emergence of Darwinian evolution within the collectives, capable of maintaining and iteratively improving upon complex combinatorial information.
