A 19-year-old patient admitted in an oncology unit for an autograft (Hodgkin disease), developed on day 20 a fatal acute respiratory failure and multiple organ failure due to an infection of the A(H1N1)v2009 virus, which was acquired in the hospital, despite partial preventive measures. At that time, the specific vaccine was not available in Réunion. We discuss the nosocomial origin of the infection. Following the epidemic wave, the vaccination rate of the general population and the hospital employees remains very low.

Validating the Accuracy of Parkinson's Disease Clinical Diagnosis: A UK Brain Bank Case-Control Study.

Ann Neurol

January 2025

Research Unit of Neurology, Neurophysiology and Neurobiology, Department of Medicine and Surgery, Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Rome, Italy.

Objective: Despite diagnostic criteria refinements, Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical diagnosis still suffers from a not satisfying accuracy, with the post-mortem examination as the gold standard for diagnosis. Seminal clinicopathological series highlighted that a relevant number of patients alive-diagnosed with idiopathic PD have an alternative post-mortem diagnosis. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of PD comparing the in-vivo clinical diagnosis with the post-mortem diagnosis performed through the pathological examination in 2 groups.

Validity of one-time phantomless patient-specific quality assurance in proton therapy with regard to the reproducibility of beam delivery.

Med Phys

January 2025

OncoRay - National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology, Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus, Technische Universität Dresden, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden - Rossendorf, Dresden, Germany.

Background: Patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) is a crucial yet resource-intensive task in proton therapy, requiring special equipment, expertise and additional beam time. Machine delivery log files contain information about energy, position and monitor units (MU) of all delivered spots, allowing a reconstruction of the applied dose. This raises the prospect of phantomless, log file-based QA (LFQA) as an automated replacement of current phantom-based solutions, provided that such an approach guarantees a comparable level of safety.

January 2025

Department of Geography, Florida State University, Bellamy Building, Room 323, 113 Collegiate Loop, PO Box 3062190, Tallahassee, FL, 32306-2190, USA.

Understanding when and where heat adversely influences health outcomes is critical for targeting interventions and adaptations. However, few studies have analyzed the role of indoor heat exposures on acute health outcomes. To address this research gap, the study partnered with the New York City Fire Department Emergency Medical Services.

Determining the QRS axis: visual estimation is equal to calculation.

Herzschrittmacherther Elektrophysiol

January 2025

Hannover Heart Rhythm Center, Department of Cardiology & Angiology, Hannover Medical School, Carl-Neuberg Str. 1, 30625, Hannover, Germany.

Background: The QRS axis of the electrocardiogram (ECG) is often considered in clinical practice, but its determination is frequently limited to a rough estimation, such as "normal", with left or right deviation, and superior or inferior in the case of premature ventricular complexes (PVCs). However, a more exact determination of the QRS axis may be warranted in certain scenarios, such as to determine the origin of PVCs more precisely, and is attainable by visual estimation using the hexaxial reference system.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine how well such an estimation of the QRS axis would correlate with the axis calculated by formulas.
