While temperature is fundamental to the design and optimal operation of shallow algal ponds, there is currently no temperature model universally applicable to these systems. This paper presents a model valid for any opaque water body of uniform temperature profile. This new universal model was tested against 1 year of experimental data collected from a wastewater treatment high rate algal pond. On the basis of 1 year of data collected every 15 min, the average errors of the predicted afternoon peak and predawn minimum were both only 1.3 °C and the average error between these extremes was just 1.2 °C. In order to demonstrate the improvement in accuracy gained, the expressions for heat fluxes used in nine prior temperature models were systematically substituted into the new universal model and evaluated against the experimental data. Errors in the peak and minimum temperatures increased by up to 2.1 and 3.2 °C, respectively, while the error between these extremes increased by up to 2.9 °C. In practical applications, these levels of inaccuracies could lead to an under/overestimation of the algal productivity and the evaporative water loss by approximately 40% and 300%, respectively.

Under confining pressure, rocks transition from brittle failure to plastic failure, and residual strength exists after complete failure. However, in the process of establishing rock damage constitutive models, the strength criteria used usually do not consider residual stress. In cold region engineering, the freeze-thaw effect caused by temperature changes should be considered in the constitutive model, and strength criteria should also be introduced.

A prediction model of the pig house environment based on Bayesian optimization (BO), squeeze and excitation block (SE), convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy and animal welfare and take control measures in advance. To ensure the optimal model configuration, the model uses a BO algorithm to fine-tune hyper-parameters, such as the number of GRUs, initial learning rate and L2 normal form regularization factor. The environmental data are fed into the SE-CNN block, which extracts the local features of the data through convolutional operations.

Based on the engineering example of Linsheng coal mine, this paper uses TF1M3D computer simulation platform to systematically analyze the process of smoke flow spreading and air flow disorder disaster from the perspective of the whole mine network, and puts forward corresponding plans and measures. A small scale similar experiment was carried out to study the updraft flow fire in the mine. Through the analysis of the collected experimental data, the variation law of the air volume of the fire source in the main air path, side branch road and total air path with different air volume and the variation characteristics of the temperature at the monitoring point with time were obtained under different air volume conditions, and the critical air volume was fitted as 1.

Topological semimetals have recently garnered widespread interest in the quantum materials research community due to their symmetry-protected surface states with dissipationless transport which have potential applications in next-generation low-power electronic devices. One such material, [Formula: see text], exhibits Dirac nodal arcs and although the topological properties of single crystals have been investigated, there have been no reports in crystalline thin film geometry. We examined the growth of [Formula: see text] heterostructures on a range of single crystals by optimizing the electron beam evaporation of Pt and Sn and studied the effect of vacuum thermal annealing on phase and crystallinity.

When combined with certain metal species, films of amorphous Ge or Si can have their typical crystallization temperatures decreased, by a factor of three or four, down to ~ 200 °C. The phenomenon is called metal-induced crystallization (MIC) and, since its first observation in the late 1960's, shows a great technological potential in producing (poly-)crystalline films of Ge or Si onto low-melting point substrates under reduced energy conditions. From the scientific point of view, the microscopic mechanisms behind the MIC phenomenon (still) represents a scientific challenge, where most of the proposed models are invariably influenced by the samples details giving the impression that they only apply to very specific metal-semiconductor combinations and/or circumstances.
