Published: January 2011

Hybrid SiO2-TiO2 films are prepared starting from tetraisopropoxy titanate and 3-glycidoxipropyltrimethoxysilane, using the sol-gel process. During the sol synthesis titania clusters grow, conferring to the samples a photocatalytic activity. In this paper we exploit this property for the fabrication of surface-relief gratings. The realized structures are characterized by SEM, AFM and profilometric measurements, while the presence of titania clusters is confirmed by TEM analyses.

Manufacture of Highly Transparent and Hazy Cellulose Nanofibril Films via Coating TEMPO-Oxidized Wood Fibers.

Traditionally, inorganic nanoparticles (SiO₂, TiO₂) have been utilized to tune the optical haze of optoelectronic devices. However, restricted to complex and costly processes for incorporating these nanoparticles, a simple and low-cost approach becomes particularly important. In this work, a simple, effective, and low-cost method was proposed to improve optical haze of transparent cellulose nanofibril films by directly depositing micro-sized 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized wood fibers ("coating" method).

This paper presents a silicon neural probe with a high-selectivity optical readout function and light emitting diodes for neurons photostimulation and fluorophore excitation. A high-selectivity Fabry-Perot optical filter on the top of a CMOS silicon photodiodes array can read the emitted fluorescence, which indicates the neurons physiological state. The design, fabrication, and characterization of the optical filter are presented.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers incorporated a rosamine fluorescent dye into transparent TiO2 and SiO2 thin films using a technique called glancing angle physical vapor deposition (GAPVD).
  • They analyzed the dye's adsorption behavior and kinetics through UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence measurements, finding that the process followed a Langmuir isotherm and pseudosecond order kinetics.
  • The study revealed the dye's anchoring mechanism and demonstrated that the optimized films showed enhanced sensitivity toward NO2 gas, outperforming other similar films described in previous studies.

Antireflection (AR) thin films on optical substrates are of great significance in high-performance optoelectronic devices. Here, we present a rational design and construction of well-organized macro-mesoporous nanostructure toward robust high-performance self-cleaning antireflective thin films on the basis of effective medium theory and finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations that combine the optical design principle. A hierarchical macro-mesoporous SiO thin film with very high porosity and gradient refractive indexes works as a λ/4-wavelength AR layer and significantly suppresses the reflection in the range from 350 to 1200 nm.
