Members of the genus Rhizopus within the class Zygomycetes can cause devastating opportunistic infections. Cutaneous disease arising from direct inoculation of fungal spores has the potential to disseminate widely. Here, we describe a dramatic case of cutaneous Rhizopus infection involving the penis in a patient with acute myelogenous leukemia. Despite aggressive surgical debridement, systemic antifungal therapy, and donor lymphocyte infusion, the infection was ultimately fatal. This case illustrates the unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in the clinical management of cutaneous Rhizopus infection.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection typically affecting immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a severe case of invasive cutaneous and peritoneal mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus, successfully treated with a combination of antifungal therapy, PD-1 inhibitor, and interferon-gamma. We highlight the importance of personalized immunotherapy in refractory cases of invasive mucormycosis.

Cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection marked by skin abscesses, swelling, necrosis, dry ulcers, and eschars. Though less fatal compared to other mucormycosis forms, delayed diagnosis and treatment in immunocompromised patients can cause the infection to spread to vital organs, becoming life-threatening. We report a case of lower extremity cutaneous mucormycosis secondary to acute myeloid leukemia, successfully managed with sustained surgical debridement and short-term oral posaconazole.

There has been a rise in COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) cases, particularly in low-income countries. We describe a case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis after recovering from COVID-19 in a kidney transplant recipient who had a known case of diabetes mellitus. The patient developed cutaneous ulcers due to Rhizopus oryzae in the right hand.

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is caused by environmental fungi and may complicate leg ulcers or traumatic wounds even in immunocompetent individuals. This case report highlights recurrent lower limb ulcers and cellulitis in a patient with type two diabetes mellitus, which was unresponsive to conventional antibiotic treatment. Histopathology revealed the diagnosis of cutaneous mucormycosis, and fungal cultures identified Rhizopus variabilis as the causative organism.

A patient on long-term glucocorticoid therapy for peristomal pyoderma gangrenosum (PPG) who developed mucormycosis (MM) of the wound with dissemination was presented. The importance of skin biopsy, together with clinical evaluation in patients with PPG who are resistant to conventional therapy or who develop new symptoms related to their PPG is stressed. The risk and pathogenesis of invasive fungal infections with long-term corticosteroid therapy were explored.
