Objective: To observe the clinical effects of miniaturized metacarpus steel plate for the treatment of child epiphysis injury, and to analyse its clinical advantages in the child epiphysis injury.

Methods: From June 2004 to May 2009, 85 children with epiphysis injury treated with miniaturized metacarpus steel plate included 52 boys and 33 girls with an average age of 6.6 years old ranging from 1 to 14 years. All the children suffered from just one part injury. There were 68 cases of upper limb injury, 19 of which were humerus epicondyle injury, 16 humerus head injury, 12 olecranon injury, 14 distal radius injury and 7 head of radius injury. The other 17 cases were lower limb injury, 12 of which were femur epicondyle injury and 5 tibia epicondyle injury.

Results: All children obtained good intention, and no postoperative complications occurrenced. Eighty-one children were followed up for 6 months to 5 years (averaged 2.6 years). The results were evaluated at 4 weeks after the operation and showed that there were excellent in 44 cases, good in 21 cases, fair in 11 cases and poor in 9 cases.

Conclusion: Treatment of child epiphysis injury with miniaturized metacarpus steel plate can achieve perfect anatomical reduction in the early stage, protect the biological environment of the recovery. This treatment makes the postoperative joint functions and movements recovery nice, barely cause any bone malformation, and worth further clinical applications.

Difficult hand fractures with multiple butterfly fragments, multiple cortical splits or intraarticular extension continue to pose a challenge for optimal stable fixation that allows early postoperative mobilisation. In this study, we describe the use of cerclage-wire-assisted fixation of 17 difficult hand fractures in 16 patients. The cerclage wires helped to maintain the reduction, so providing sufficient initial stability for placement of a plate and screws.

Objective: To quantify the adhesion of Staphylococcus aureus to 4 equine bone surfaces passivated in a balanced polyionic solution (Plasmalyte) or hyperimmune equine plasma (Polymune plasma).

Study Design: In vitro comparative study.

Sample Population: Third metacarpal bone (MC3) surface explants from 9 equine cadavers.

A novel, multi-use, low-stiffness and low-cost transducer for measuring in vitro strains has been developed and tested. Currently available strain measurement methods are either too expensive, too complicated or too inflexible for multi-use strain measurement. The stainless-steel modular strain measurement clip introduced here was instrumented with four 350 Omega axial strain gauges in a full Wheatstone bridge configuration to take advantage of commonly available strain gauge amplifier equipment.

Improving the predictability of performance by prerace detection of dorsal metacarpal disease in thoroughbred racehorses.

Aust Vet J

July 2000

Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital, Division of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, Murdoch University, Western Australia.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of dorsal metacarpal disease in 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses by prerace inspection and to evaluate the effectiveness of a dorsal metacarpal disease detection program on the predictability of race performance (finishing in the order predicted by punters) and the distance between the first- and last-placed horse in a field.

Design: A retrospective study using client-owned horses.

Methods: A program of prerace detection of dorsal metacarpal disease using digital palpation of the dorsal aspect of the third metacarpal bone of both forelimbs of 2-year-old Thoroughbreds racing at Ascot racecourse was instituted by the Western Australian Turf Club in December 1995.
