The redox potential of the primary electron donor P700, E(m)(P700/P700(+)), of Photosystem I (PSI) has been determined for 10 oxygenic photosynthesis organisms, ranging from cyanobacteria, red algae, green algae to higher plants, by spectroelectrochemistry with an optically transparent thin-layer electrode (OTTLE) cell to elucidate the scattering by as much as 150 mV in reported values of E(m)(P700/P700(+)). The E(m)(P700/P700(+)) values determined within error ranges of ± 1-4 mV exhibited a significant species dependence, with a span >70 mV, from +398 to +470 mV vs. the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). The E(m)(P700/P700(+)) value appears to change systematically in going from cyanobacteria and primitive eukaryotic red algae, then to green algae and higher plants. From an evolutionary point of view, this result suggests that the species believed to appear later in evolution of photosynthetic organisms exhibit higher values of E(m)(P700/P700(+)). Further, the species dependence of E(m)(P700/P700(+)) seems to originate in the species-dependent redox potentials of soluble metalloproteins, Cyt c(6) and plastocyanin, which re-reduce the oxidized P700 in the electron transfer chain.

Background: Gene-edited pigs for xenotransplantation usually contain one or more transgenes encoding human complement regulatory proteins (CRPs). Because of species differences, human CRP(s) expressed in gene-edited pigs may have difficulty inhibiting the activation of exogenous rabbit complement added to a complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) assay. The use of human complement instead of rabbit complement in CDC experiments may more accurately reflect the actual regulatory activity of human CRP(s).

Genomic imprinting is the parent-of-origin dependent monoallelic expression of genes often associated with regions of germline-derived DNA methylation that are maintained as differentially methylated regions (gDMRs) in somatic tissues. This form of epigenetic regulation is highly conserved in mammals and is thought to have co-evolved with placentation. Tissue-specific gDMRs have been identified in human placenta, suggesting that species-specific imprinting dependent on unorthodox epigenetic establishment or maintenance may be more widespread than previously anticipated.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), also known as HKU15, is a swine enteropathogenic virus that is believed to have originated in birds. PDCoV belongs to the genus Deltacoronavirus (DCoV), the members of which have mostly been identified in diverse avian species. We recently reported that chicken or porcine aminopeptidase N (APN), the major cellular receptor for PDCoV, can mediate cellular entry via three pseudotyped retroviruses displaying spike proteins from three avian DCoVs (HKU11, HKU13, and HKU17).
