Objective: To investigate the predictive value of 1 year subtraction MRI (sMRI) on activity and progression over the next 4 years in early phase multiple sclerosis (MS). To compare sensitivity of sMRI and contrast enhanced MRI towards disease activity.
Methods: The study was performed on 127 MS patients with brain MRI within 5 years of symptom onset (y0), after 1 year (y1) and after 5 years (y5). Measures of clinical (Expanded Disability Status Scale, relapse rate) and conventional MRI outcomes (brain parenchyma fraction (BPF); T2 lesion volume (T2LV); contrast enhancing lesions (CEL)) were available at all time points. sMRI was obtained from y1-y0, y5-y1 and y5-y0 image pairs and the number of new, enlarged, resolved and regressed lesions was counted.
Results: One year lesion change measured by sMRI predicted sMRI lesion change (p<0.0001), BPF and T2LV (p<0.05) changes, as well as clinical relapse rate (p<0.02) in the subsequent 4 years. sMRI measures were retained in stepwise predictive models that included other candidate MRI predictors. Active lesions on sMRI over a 1, 4 or 5 year interval provided a more sensitive assessment of disease activity than number of CEL at y0, y1 and/or y5: 83%, 93% and 90% of patients without CEL showed sMRI activity during the y1-y0, y5-y1, and y5-y0 intervals.
Conclusions: sMRI is a feasible and sensitive tool for detecting MS activity and may provide an alternative to contrast enhanced MRI in clinical practice, particularly in cases where CEL are not available or inconclusive. Furthermore, sMRI metrics combined with conventional MRI outcomes (CEL, T2LV, BPF) can increase the prediction of longer term MRI activity and progression.

AtbZIP69 overexpression in wheat significantly enhanced drought and low nitrogen tolerance by modulating ABA synthesis, antioxidant activity, nitrogen allocation, and transporter gene expression, boosting yield. In this study, we generated wheat plants with improved low nitrogen (LN) and drought tolerance by introducing AtbZIP69, a gene encoding a basic leucine zipper domain transcription factor, into the wheat cultivar Shi 4056. AtbZIP69 localized to the nucleus and activated transcription.

Aims/hypothesis: Eating disorders are over-represented in type 1 diabetes and are associated with an increased risk of complications, but it is unclear whether type 1 diabetes affects the treatment of eating disorders. We assessed incidence and treatment of eating disorders in a nationwide sample of individuals with type 1 diabetes and diabetes-free control individuals.
Methods: Our study comprised 11,055 individuals aged <30 who had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1998-2010, and 11,055 diabetes-free control individuals matched for age, sex and hospital district.

Fruit spoilage caused by microorganisms results in huge economic losses and health risks worldwide every year. To develop an intelligent antimicrobial material capable of responding to the physiological activity of postharvest fruits and releasing antibacterial agents on demand, we fabricated a pH-responsive film for the release of chlorine dioxide (ClO) using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and sodium chlorite (NaClO) via the solution casting method, with a CMC:NaClO ratio of 1:2 w/w. An acid environment simulated by 4 % acetic acid activated 43 % of ClO released by the film within 7 days.

Purpose: The incidence of vascular dementia (VaD), as one of the main types of dementia in old age, has been increasing year by year, and exploring its pathogenesis and seeking practical and effective treatment methods are undoubtedly the key to solving this problem. Phosphoglycerate translocase 5 (PGAM5), as a crossroads of multiple signaling pathways, can lead to mitochondrial fission, which in turn triggers the onset and development of necroptosis, and thus PGAM5 may be a novel target for the prevention and treatment of vascular dementia.
Methods: Animal model of vascular dementia was established by Two-vessel occlusion (2-VO) method, and cellular model of vascular dementia was established by oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) method.

Introduction: In city hospitals, subway-related traumatic amputations are a frequent pattern of injury, however there is a paucity of literature on this specific injury pattern. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of subway-related traumatic amputations, as well as compare them to non-subway traumatic amputations.
Patients And Methods: Retrospective review was performed at a single Level-1 trauma center in a metropolitan area.
