Purpose: To report the additional clinical value of real-time Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the detection of Treponema pallidum in aqueous humor.
Methods: A real-time (RT) PCR assay targeting the polymerase 1 gene of Treponema pallidum was performed in aqueous humor samples collected in consecutive patients with ocular syphilis.
Results: Five patients presenting with optic neuritis (1), posterior placoid chorioretinitis (1), or panuveitis with retinitis (3) were tested. The PCR results were positive in the 3 cases of panuveitis and negative in the 2 other cases.
Conclusion: RT-PCR for Treponema pallidum in aqueous humor is useful to confirm syphilitic panuveitis.

Treponema denticola, a bacterium that forms a "red complex" with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia, is associated with periodontitis, pulpitis, and other oral infections. The major surface protein (Msp) is a surface glycoprotein with a relatively well-established overall domain structure (N-terminal, central and C-terminal regions) and a controversial tertiary structure. As one of the key virulence factors of T.

Background: The liver is the most common site of digestive system tumor metastasis, but not all liver metastases can be traced back to the primary lesions. Although it is unusual, syphilis can impact the liver, manifesting as syphilitic hepatitis with inflammatory nodules, which might be misdiagnosed as metastasis.
Case Summary: This case report involves a 46-year-old female who developed right upper abdominal pain and intermittent low fever that persisted for more than three months.

The rising global incidence of syphilis underscores the risk of transmission through blood transfusions. Treponema pallidum, the pathogen responsible for syphilis, represents a major public health challenge. Accurate detection is essential for controlling the disease, particularly in asymptomatic blood donors.

A 66-year-old woman presented with 9 days of left clavicle pain, with no history of recent trauma. CT images showed a left clavicle fracture with a surrounding soft tissue mass. An 18F-FDG PET/CT scan revealed increased FDG uptake in the tonsils, multiple lymph nodes, and the pathologically fractured clavicle, initially suggesting malignancy.

Unraveling the metabolism of Treponema pallidum is a key component to understanding the pathogenesis of the human disease that it causes, syphilis. For decades, it was assumed that glucose was the sole carbon/energy source for this parasitic spirochete. But the lack of citric-acid-cycle enzymes suggested that alternative sources could be utilized, especially in microaerophilic host environments where glycolysis should not be robust.
