The frequency of assault by burning among all burn patients varies from country to country. Assault by burning, although uncommon, is a serious form of trauma and a significant source of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the epidemiologic features, current etiological factors, and the mortality of nine patients admitted to our burn unit between January 1999 and January 2009 after unexpected burn assault by paint thinner ignition caused by street children addicted to paint thinner. The circumstances of this injury and preventive measures are discussed.

This study addresses the inherent photocatalytic activity of pure titanium dioxide (TiO), which limits its application as an industrial pigment. To mitigate this issue, a core-shell structure was employed, where TiO cores were encapsulated within SiO shells. Perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) was introduced as a superior SiO precursor over tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), resulting in thinner and more uniform SiO shells.

The psychophysical Sniffin' Sticks test, which includes an odor identification test, is the gold standard for assessing the sense of smell in clinical and scientific practice. A necessary requirement for the odor identification test is a close familiarity with the odors used by the inhabitants of the region in which it is used. We studied 77 healthy volunteers and 51 patients with olfactory dysfunction and we found that Russians are not familiar with the three smells from the test (licorice, turpentine and anise) and are completely unfamiliar with the one proposed alternative answer (chives).

Automobile paint chips are a crucial piece of trace evidence for forensic investigators. This is because automotive paints are composed of multiple layers, including the primer, basecoat, and clearcoat, each of which has its own chemical composition that can vary by vehicle make, model, year, and manufacturing plant. Thus, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectral databases for automobile paint systems have been established to aid law enforcement in, for example, narrowing search parameters for a suspect's vehicle.
