This study investigated the potential genotoxic and carcinogenic effects of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a hazardous compound found in ranitidine formulations that are used to treat excessive stomach acid. The study first examined the effects of NDMA-contaminated ranitidine formulation on Allium cepa root growth and mitotic activity. The results demonstrated dose-dependent decreases in both root growth and mitotic index indicating genotoxicity and cell division disruption.

Carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds, especially N-nitroso dimethylamine, increase the risk of gastric cancer development. Cytochrome P450-2E1 metabolizes this compound, thus generating an oxidant microenvironment. We aimed to evaluate in gastric adenocarcinoma cells if its effect on CYP2E1 and ROS affects signaling pathways associated with gastric cancer oncogenesis.

The effects of cauliflower treated with atmospheric cold plasma (ACP), as a natural nitrite source, on the curing of ground ham and nitrosamine formation were investigated. Ground ham was prepared using sodium nitrite and ACP-treated cauliflower powder (PTCP) to achieve initial nitrite concentrations of 60 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. ACP treatment generated nitrite in cauliflower but significantly reduced the antioxidant activity (P < 0.

-Nitrosamines are contaminants found throughout the environment, including in drinking water, and many nitrosamines are likely potent carcinogens. Correspondingly, there is a need for rapid and cost-effective in-field detection methods that can provide timely information about their contamination levels in water. This study details a colorimetric assay for detecting aqueous -nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) by photochemical nitrosation of a commercial naphtholsulfonate, to offer an attractive alternative to traditional laboratory-based analysis.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely detected in the aquatic environment due to their extensive use in a wide array of antibacterial products during the pandemic. In the current study, UV/monochloramine (UV/NHCl) was used to degrade three typical QACs, namely benzalkonium compounds (BACs), dialkyl dimethyl ammonium compounds (DADMACs), and alkyl trimethyl ammonium compounds (ATMACs). This process achieved high efficiency in removing BACs from water samples.
