There were 176 culture-confirmed cases of melioidosis in north Queensland over the 10 years, 2000-2009. Most (nearly 80%) occurred in the first 4 months of the year. The overall case fatality was 21%, but was 14% in 2005-2009. Of the 173 adult cases, 45% were in Indigenous adults. Both diabetes and alcohol abuse were more prevalent among Indigenous adults with melioidosis than among non-Indigenous adults. The incidences in Indigenous adults were particularly high in the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area, Cape York and Mornington Island, whereas for non-indigenous adults there appears to be a higher risk within Townsville city.

Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, NY, USA.
Background: Blood-based Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers have been increasingly employed for diagnostic and prognostic purposes, thanks to high diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing AD from healthy controls or other dementia types. p-tau217 exhibits stronger associations with AD hallmarks in CSF and brain, compared to other p-tau isoforms. Furthermore, the majority of these studies have been conducted in non-Hispanic Whites, limiting our understanding of the performances and utility of these biomarkers across ethnicities.

Background: The Puipui Malu Manatu (PMM) study (RF1AG075904) is determining Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) prevalence by administering cognitive assessment tools and determining prevalence of known genetic and plasma biomarkers. The sampling method uses a cluster and selection process to obtain a randomized sample of 1089 adults that is generalizable to the population. Research hesitancy exists due to historical abuse of non-Indigenous researchers conducting studies that are not reflective of the community health needs.

Addressing care partners' needs for support and services is particularly important, as care partner burden is associated with negative health outcomes in care partners and people living with ADRD. Care partners from marginalized populations experience inequities in research participation, care burden, and access to supports and services.
