In two-stage revision of infected implants, the first stage involves removing the implant and implanting a joint spacer, and the second stage involves implanting a new prosthesis at least 6 weeks later. Spacers have two main functions: local administration of high-dose antibiotics, and preservation of the joint space by reducing soft tissue retraction and improving patient comfort until reimplantation. The present review aims to detail the necessary characteristics of antibiotics added to cement to achieve good joint diffusion, to describe the steps of two-stage revision, and to present the types of spacer available according to the joint and complications.

MUPS (multiple unit particle systems) are oral dosage forms consisting of small particles which are filled into capsules or compressed into tablets. Compared to monolithic sustained-release tablets, MUPS tablets rapidly disintegrate inside the stomach releasing the contained small particles, which can be emptied from the stomach independent of housekeeping waves. Control of release can be achieved by adapting the particle composition.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by cognitive decline, is increasingly recognized as a disorder marked by synaptic loss and dysfunction. Despite this understanding, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to synaptic impairment remain largely unknown. In this study, we elucidate a previously undiscovered signaling pathway wherein the S-nitrosylation of the Cdk5 activator p39, a post-translational modification involving the addition of nitric oxide to protein cysteine residues, plays a crucial role in synaptic dysfunction associated with AD.

In recent decades, unfavorable solubility of novel therapeutic agents is considered as an important challenge in pharmaceutical industry. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) is known as a green, cost-effective, high-performance, and promising solvent to develop the low solubility of drugs with the aim of enhancing their therapeutic effects.
