Two new heteroleptic ruthenium(II) photosensitizers that contains 2,2';6,2''-terpyridine with extended π-conjugation with donor groups, a 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine anchoring ligand and a thiocyanate ligand have been designed, synthesized and fully characterized by CHN, mass spectrometry, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry. The new sensitizers have either 3,5-di-tert-butyl phenyl (m-BL-5) or triphenylamine (m-BL-6) groups, where the molar extinction coefficient of both the sensitizers is higher than the analogous ruthenium dyes. Both the sensitizers were tested in dye-sensitized solar cells using two different redox electrolytes.

Ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (RPCs) that emit from triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) states find a wide variety of uses ranging from luminophores to potential anti-cancer or anti-bacterial therapeutics. Herein we describe a greener, microwave-assisted synthetic pathway for the preparation of homoleptic [Ru(N^N)] and bis-heteroleptic [Ru(N^N)(N'^N')] type complexes. This employs the bio-renewable solvent Cyrene™, dihydrolevoglucosenone, as a green alternative to ,'-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the synthesis of Ru(N^N)Cl intermediate complexes, obtaining comparable yields for N^N = 2,2'-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline and methylated derivatives.

A new class of Ru-sulfonamidate precatalysts for sp C-H hydroxylation is described along with a versatile process for assembling unique heteroleptic Ru(II) complexes. The latter has enabled structure-performance studies to identify an optimal precatalyst, , bearing one 4,4'-di--butylbipyridine (dtbpy) and one pyridylsulfonamidate ligand. Single-crystal X-ray analysis confirmed the structure and stereochemistry of this adduct.

A novel tridentate ligand featuring an acridine core and pyrazole rings, namely 2,7- di-butyl-4,5-di(pyrazol-1-yl)acridine, , was designed and used to create two ruthenium(II) complexes: [Ru](PF) and [Ru(tpy)](PF). Surprisingly, the ligand adopted different coordination modes in the complexes: facial coordination for the homoleptic complex and meridional coordination for the heteroleptic complex. The electronic absorption and electrochemical properties were evaluated.

In this work, we present a concise modular assembly strategy using one universal heteroleptic 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)pyridine-based ruthenium(II) complex as a starting building block. Extending the concept from established ligand modifications and subsequent complexation (), the later appearing chemistry-on-the-complex methodology was used for late-stage syntheses, , assembling discrete building blocks to molecular architectures (here: dyad and triads). We focused on Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira cross-couplings as two of the best-known C-C bond forming reactions.

ConspectusThe harvesting and conversion of solar energy have become a burning issue for our modern societies seeking to move away from the exploitation of fossil fuels. In this context, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have proven to be trustworthy alternatives to silicon-based cells with advantages in terms of transparency and efficiency under low illumination conditions. These devices are highly dependent on the ability of the sensitizer that they contain to collect sunlight and transfer an electron to a semiconductor after excitation.
