We report the observation of intrinsic exchange hardening in polycrystalline GdN thin films grown at room temperature by magnetron sputtering. We find, in addition to the ferromagnetic phase, that a fraction of GdN crystallizes in a structural polymorphic form which orders antiferromagnetically. The relative fraction of these two phases was controlled by varying the relative abundance of reactive species in the sputtering plasma by means of the sputtering power and N(2) partial pressure. An exchange bias of ∼ 30 Oe was observed at 10 K. The exchange coupling between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phases resulted in an order of magnitude enhancement in the coercive field in these films.

Purpose: To elucidate the mechanical properties of the bovine lens cortical membrane (CM), the nuclear membrane (NM) containing cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs), and whole bovine lenses.
Methods: The total lipids (lipids plus cholesterol) from the cortex and nucleus of a single bovine lens were isolated using the monophasic methanol extraction method. Supported CMs and NMs were prepared from total lipids extracted from the cortex and nucleus, respectively, using a rapid solvent exchange method and probe-tip sonication, followed by the fusion of unilamellar vesicles on a flat, freshly cleaved mica surface.

Tooth enamel maturation requires the removal of proteins from the mineralizing enamel matrix to allow for crystallite growth until full hardness is reached to meet the mechanical needs of mastication. While this process takes up to several years in humans before the tooth erupts, it is greatly accelerated in the faster-developing pigs. Pig teeth erupt with softer, protein-rich enamel that is similar to hypomineralized human enamel but continues to harden quickly after eruption.
