The use of porous micro-and nanostructured materials within microfluidic devices results in unique fluid transport characteristics. In this paper, we investigate the microfluidic behavior of hybrid alumina nanotube-based pathways within the hydrophobic carbon nanotube (CNT) barriers. These hybrid systems provide unique benefits for potential liquid transport control in porous structures with real-time sensing of fluids.

Background: The National Lung Screening Trial was conducted to determine whether three annual screenings (rounds T0, T1, and T2) with low-dose helical computed tomography (CT), as compared with chest radiography, could reduce mortality from lung cancer. We present detailed findings from the first two incidence screenings (rounds T1 and T2).

Methods: We evaluated the rate of adherence of the participants to the screening protocol, the results of screening and downstream diagnostic tests, features of the lung-cancer cases, and first-line treatments, and we estimated the performance characteristics of both screening methods.

The advent of low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) altered the landscape of lung-cancer screening, with studies indicating that low-dose CT detects many tumors at early stages. The National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) was conducted to determine whether screening with low-dose CT could reduce mortality from lung cancer.
