Aim: To study the effect of Baroque music in people with dementia.

Methods: Patients in a multicultural dementia-specific aged care facility were subjected to Baroque music in a cross-over study.

Results: There were significantly more behavioural disturbances during the weeks when Baroque music was played compared to control periods (0.2 more episodes per week, P = 0.01), and more episodes in the afternoon shift compared to evening shift (1 more episode per week, P = 0.001).

Conclusion: These results confirm that music can influence behaviour but is contrary to previous results.

Immediate implant placement influenced by musical flow: a prospective randomized controlled clinical trial.

BMC Oral Health

May 2024

Department of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Biomedical and Health Sciences, Universidad Europea de Madrid, Plaza Francisco Morano s/n, Madrid, 28005, Spain.

Background: The purpose of this study was to test how musical flow using baroque (BM) and classical era music (CM) as a non-pharmacological therapy can control anxiety and pain levels among patients undergoing IPI (Immediate post-extraction implants).

Methods: 78 patients who required an IPI were enrolled in this randomized clinical trial. Each patient was assigned to one of the three experimental groups with a simple randomization: Group I (n = 26) listened to BM; Group II (n = 27) listened to CM; and Group III (n = 25) did not listen to music and was the control group (C).

Variations in dynamics are an essential component of musical performance in most instruments. To study the factors that contribute to dynamic variations, we used a model approaching, allowing for determination of the individual contribution of different musical features. Thirty monophonic melodies from 3 stylistic eras with all expressive markings removed were performed by 20 pianists on a Disklavier piano.

Music and magnetic fields both play important regulatory roles in brain learning and memory. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of music rhythmic magnetic fields at different frequencies on long-term potentiation (LTP) in the Schaffer-CA1 region of the hippocampus, with the goal of elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying the impact of music rhythmic magnetic fields on brain learning and memory. Three different frequency music tracks were selected, including soothing track 1: Courante from the Baroque Suite, medium-frequency track 2: saxophone version of Liang Zhu, and high-frequency track 3: Johann Pachelbel's music track Canon (trumpet version).

A data flow is presented for visualising the evolution of elementary structures of polyphonic music from early Baroque to late Romantic, using quasi-phylogenies based on fingerprint diagrams and barcode sequence data of 2-tuples of consecutive vertical pitch class sets (pcs). The present methodological study, which sees itself as a proof of concept for a data-driven approach, uses examples of music from the Baroque, the Viennese School and the Romantic era to show that such quasi-phylogenies can be generated from multi-track MIDI (v. 1) files that largely correspond to the eras and the chronology of compositions and composers.

[Music for your heart].

G Ital Cardiol (Rome)

December 2022

Flautista concertista, direttore artistico Emilia-Romagna Festival.

Music is an important tool to improve our human condition and better our mood, but the interesting thing is that some types of music seem to have "medicinal" qualities, so that they have coined the term "music therapy" to define the potential benefits on our body. However, we do not know if these effects can be measured and reproduced, as well as they are able to work on the cardiovascular system. Listening to music allows to explore deep and complex aspects of our soul, but also modulates the rhythm of some physiological components of our heart.
